Smoothing Out A New Cylinder
You've just bought a new replacement cylinder or a big bore kit. Sure, you can install it as is and it will probably be fine but a little bit of work could improve engine longevity and performance. Some midrange or high end performance kits probably won't need this work, but stock and mild aftermarket kits are notorious for leaving room for improvement. Here's a look at some simple steps to prep your new cylinder.
The inside of the exhaust port is often rough cast just like the outside of many cylinders. Very rough and bumpy surfaces like this do not promote exhaust flow.
Here you see the same exhaust port after a little work. Certainly not great, but a few minutes with a Dremel makes a better finish.
Chamfering the ports and some other surfaces is important to help your piston rings last longer. You can use sandpaper, emory paper, or small fine files to knock off the sharp edges.
It's never a bad idea to store a cylinder that won't get used for a while in a bag with a coating of oil or WD40 to avoid rust.
