Alright. So I just recently moved to Colorado. I had to take plane and my 49cc tao tao was shipped on a moving truck. I ran all the gas out of it (left the oil in, bad, I know) and just yesterday I got it registered so I fired her up and she didn't start. Took about an hour and a half of tuning the carb along with kick starting and electric starting (I even put my finger in the exhaust, heard it helps) for it to turn over. It sounds sick. Whenever I open full throttle, it feels like it's at half throttle. I never get over 25mph on the speedometer unless going downhill. Before I could easily hit 45 on flat ground (I think I have a secret 63, and I'm not sure if 45 is accurate just what the speedo says). Maybe I need to upjet? Clean the carb? I've never cleaned the carb before because I have absolutely no idea how to. Btw, strange thing, I think it might also be a problem with the transmission because when I come down a hill and I'm back on flat ground I can keep my speed whereas if I have to stop at a stoplight and go I won't go past 25

WELCOME!
Was there a big change in elevation?

Thanks, I feel I might end up being pretty active on these forums. And I can't be for certain but looking at the city's elevation I moved from and my current city it's about a 5,000 foot difference

You may indeed need to upjet for the elevation change. BTW- these china speedo's are notoriously optimistic. 45mph on china speedo is usually more like 35mph GPS verified. That's why you'll see most experienced tuners list a GPS verified speed.. hope u like it here! I think this place is great!!

Most of the other forums are dead. I'm aware of the speedo sucking lol. I just use it for reference when I talk about how fast it was and it is now. Won't I need to change the carb to upjet because the tao tao's are sealed?

Where's a good place to get jets? Also, would restricting the air intake help? If it's running too lean, well, I could just stop some air flow

I don't have an impact wrench or the money to purchase one, and I don't have that special tool. Is there a way it can be done without either of those?

Turns out my carb wasn't sealed, or has already been unsealed. I adjusted the air/fuel needle and got a few more mph's out of that. But now my speedometer is acting buggy sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. I've removed the restrictor from my airbox and when I do that it died on full throttle so I've kept the restrictor in. That tube with a clamp, that was clamped onto where the kickstart comes out, should it be on the airbox? Is it safe to just run without it at all? How would I go about adjusting the needle, my engine accelerates and then slows at wot so I think that may be the big issue?

The needle sits down inside the diaphragm slide. You gotta remove the cap on top of the carb, the spring and then the diaphragm and then you can slide the needle out of the slide. There may be a little plastic piece on top of the needle. It must be seated properly in there when reinstalling the diaphragm. Yours will probably look slightly different than the one below but it's the same thing. The needles will bend pretty easy so be careful when removing and installing the clip. I use a pair of pointy pliers to grab the clip. The lower the clip is on the needle the richer the fuel. make sure the diaphragm is seated in the carb properly when installing the cap.

My screwdriver isn't wanting to turn the screws to take the diaphragm out, I'll run up to lowes and see if I can find a better one. As for the airbox will I need to rejet? When I took the restrictor out of the airbox my scoot wouldn't go past 15mph and at wot it would die completely so I have kept the restrictor in. I feel like if I take the airbox off the same would happen

Maybe you need to go the other way and restrict the air box more. I have run into that situation a few times where I put duct tape on the air box snorkel to restrict it and that "fixed" the bogging. One thing I learned in my 5 years of repairing these things is to first try everything that costs $0.00 before you buy anything. One time I had a scooter that was running great at idle and crapped out at WOT and after cleaning the carb 3 times, adjusting the valves and checking the cam timing twice, replacing the gas and the spark plug it turned out to be a bad spark plug boot. You just never know when stuff is gonna go bad on these things and eliminating all the free stuff as suspects is the best first step.
BTW, leaving the oil in the engine doesn't hurt anything.

Sounds like you're lean- to be expected with an elevation change of 5000 ft... I'd get a few bigger jets and re-jet the carbs main jet.
