Hi, I am an amateur at this and this is my first ever two wheeler although I have experience riding one before. It is a TaoTao Venus 50. I had problem starting the bike after I assembled it - the battery seemed to be the problem. I trickle charged it overnight and the scooter started eventually. I gave it a couple of miles. It seemed to run just fine- it was weird. The scooter is very slow to accelerate and eventually picks up pace. The revs I gave was not proportional at all, for the same thing done, it would sometimes be very slow, sometime run just fine. The next morning I tried to start it, temperature is in low 30s here in Santa Fe. It took a couple tries but the scooter started but the engine could not sustain for long - it died when I tried to accelerate. Couple more tries and the engine ran again, I got about 10 meters ahead and engine died again. I tried then a number of times to sustain the engine, it starts just fine but it cannot hold it for too long. Please please help me out, what the problem might be. Is it still the battery?! I have not checked anything else, I don't know what you to look for. I tried to check for the carb and valves but i could not open up the frame to do so. No videos available for Venus 50 at all. I have limited knowledge in all this but I can hopefully get through. Thank you.

When it comes to these China scoots they're basically all the same motor just different frames or bodies etc. I'm assuming your TaoTao has the 139qmb 4 stroke. Basically what I'm trying to say is it doesn't have to be a vid for the Venus to be relevant!

As long as it's starting it shouldn't be the battery. Could be on a DC powered CDI, but I think the TaoTao 50s are all using AC. You should be able to get the seat bucket out by removing 4 bolts or nuts. 2 in the bottom of it and 2 near the latch. Don't force it out. If it doesn't pull out pretty easy, check around it to see what's stopping it. Could be additional screws or clips. Once the seat is out you can access the carb. You'll probably need the front panel (front under seat) to get to the valve cover and valves easier. Not familiar with that exact style of scoot, but look around it for screws first and if the seat bucket is out you're likely to be able to see any clips. Take your time and don't force anything.

That scooter does indeed have a GY6 130QMB short case engine. That means that most if not all the tech stuff for 50cc posted in the library section will apply to your engine. First thing I would do would be to take the entire back end plastics off the scooter so you can see everything real good. You are gonna have learn to do it eventually so might as well get it over with. There is always a certain order the plastics have to come off so take your time and be careful cause there are small locking tabs that will break easily if you pry too hard. Some panels like the lower side panels and the rear fenders usually need to slide forward or back a little once you get the screws out to unlock them. Once you have the plastic out of the way check to see if you have a sealed carburetor. If you do, that kinda sucks but not the end of the world. Sealed carbs have a cap over the mixture screw and screws that are tamper resistant on the bowl. They can be un-sealed by drilling out and replacing the screws and drilling the mixture screw cap. There is info on that in the carb section. It's not unheard of to get a carburetor with metal filings or other debris in it from the factory. It is also not unheard of to get water condensation in the fuel tank in cold weather so you may have water in the gas tank and carburetor bowl. Next I would check the spark plug. It should have an NGK C7HSA or CR7HSA in there. If it has a cheapy Chinese plug replace it with an NGK as soon as you can. Then check the valves. Info on how to do that in the engine section of the tech library. Lastly, keep asking questions here. During cold weather months most of the gear-headed guys and gals here aren't doing much riding so they have time on their hands. Just curious:Did you buy this scooter from an online dealer or locally? Funny how this marketing video mentions the kick starter and even zooms in on the belt cover but the kick lever isn't there. Just a hole where it should be and the center stand. "TVT Trive Train"

Thank you all for your welcome and kind responses. I returned back from college and gave it a try - and VROOM. It was up and running. Got about 6 miles in, felt good, notched up about 35-40mph.
I do plan to do a thorough inspection over the weekend, and I did see, 90GTVert, your videos on ATM50. That should get me through. I will call for you guys again if I encounter something I cant get through. I did order a new battery with a little bit better CCA, just in case. Dont the factory ones have like 30 CCA?

Fox, I will make sure to open everything up, and check everything thoroughly when I open it up this weekend. And, I bought it online from the same website. lol. And yeah, I will keep asking questions. Hats off to the admins and all the contributors for this great forum. It looks like I will spending a lot of time here.
