So, I have a 49cc 2011 TaoTao Peace Sports I purchased it used on craigslist for $220 at least 6 months ago at 4500 miles. It kinda leaked a bit of oil when I got it.
It's got about 9k miles on it now, beat up to shit. Most of the fiberlass panels were held in with zip-ties, when I got it, they're all missing now since I had to remove a lot of the panels to work on it. It smokes like a chimney, leaving behind a large cloud of blue smoke at every intersection. Up until recently, despite it's appearance it ran like a champ, often going up to 50mph on flat ground.
Now it barely reaches 30, super slow to accelerate, and it's smoking even more than usual. It starts up and idles just fine though.
I've checked the spark plug, tried adjusting the valves. I tried the factory recommended 0.003". Which didn't seem to make a difference. I read somewhere online that if the gap is too wide, it'll make a clicking noise, and you want the gap as wide as possible without clicking. So I tried .004, no difference, no clicking, and now .006, no difference, no clicking.
I'm starting to think that my valves are completely fried out at this point. Probably have to replace a few gaskets as well.
I'm no mechanic, but I have learned a lot from forums and youtube.
I think I need to replace the valve heads and stems, and basically tear the entire engine down and replace all the gaskets etc.
What do you guys think?
Also it's a cheap Chinese scooter, most of the screws strip out the instant I start messing with them. So, I might need an easy reliable method of removing these cheap screws, and some reasonable quality screws to replace them with.
Is there a kit that includes everything I need? It's a 139QMB-P

kevin, let's put this into a proper perspective. in 6 months of riding you have driven the scooter on average about 800 miles per month. Even though speedometers on these are 15 to 20% optimistic- you achieved decent level ground road speeds. this proves that the scooter was a decent scooter. during this time the scooter has had an oil leak, whether or not you repaired it is unknown- if that oil leak continued you might have checked the oil and added some occasionally-- possibly either too much or allowed it to get low - either case will cause damage there is another possibility, that is the carb is flooding and causing the blue smoke because it is washing the cylinder, but you most likely will still need engine repair the body panels cracking and breaking is quite normal for some scoots- eg: see the Admins Tao Tao build thread 49ccscoot.proboards.com/thread/6365/project-taotao-stroke-experiences-upgradesmy guess is the engine is worn out, but you will not know that until some compression and cylinder leakage tests have been performed. If the numbers warrant a rebuild then you will most likely find piston skirt damage like the one in this posted thread photo, it is somewhat typical for these engines. Also the cylinder is probably too scored to recondition in your case 49ccscoot.proboards.com/thread/10974/badSince you have difficulty with nuts and bolts, get a knowledgeable local helper to assist you with a proper repair. IMO, based on your info, your best choice is a drop in engine asm from someone that can provide support. There are a few choices, here is a forum member 49ccscoot.proboards.com/thread/10620/rebuilt-gy6-80the other choices are one out of the Atlanta area on CL (do a search in motorcycles / scooters), plus at least two dealers advertising here. I would not recommend either of the two dealers. Scrappy Dog (because they can't be trusted) 49ccscoot.proboards.com/thread/10598/scrappy-dog-scooters?page=2Scooters to Go because they don't provide quality. view annotated cylinder head photos from an engine sold to another forum member that failed here: autosellpro.com/bbk

Maybe if Kevin would share his location with us a knowledgeable member of this club might realize he lives not too far away from him and help the guy out. Maybe...

I saw that Atlanta was mentioned. I live in Marietta and have a shop, if any help is needed I've rebuilt and tuned dozens of scoots!

Top of engine can be replaced for around $100 ish. But if top of engine is beat you have to wonder of the rest? Complete engines can be had for around $300+ or gettin 4500 miles for$220 may of got your moneys worth? Resell on cl as a fixer upper & shop for a better shape scoot? Just tossing some ideas out there.

I'm living in Las Vegas, NV right now. @ Bull. Regarding the oil leak. I always figured I would eventually go with a BBK upgrade and replace all of the gaskets etc when I upgrade. I mean if I'm going to break down the engine, may as well right? You're probably correct regarding the constant filling of the oil. I think on average I would go through about half a quart per-week. For an engine this small, that's quite a lot. This is my first scooter, I got it on the cheap in the first place. I never planned to take extremely good care of it or restore it to factory condition or anything crazy like that. I have no intention of putting top-of-the-line high-quality parts into this thing, or paying somebody else to work on it. For the money involved in things like that, It would be smarter to simply sell this one and buy a newer, better scooter. The 2011 TaoTao for me is just a starter-scooter, a learning experience. There's no getting around the fact that this thing is cheap, ugly, worn down, and beat up. That being said, I wouldn't mind throwing in a cheap big bore kit, just for fun, gits and shiggles, to turn my ugly run down critter into an ugly beast. I'm not embarrassed at all riding something so cheap, ugly, and beat up. The only thing that embarrasses me is when it's running slow, or not running at all. What do you guys think of this kit? www.ebay.com/itm/100cc-Big-Bore-Kit-Performance-Cam-CDI-Coil-Variator-Carburetor-GY6-139QMB-/161368092373?pt=Other_Vehicle_Parts&hash=item259249aed5

So will I have to take this thing apart before I can tell what parts I'm going to need?
I have been holding off for the time being. I don't want to start a project I can't finish in a reasonable amount of time. I don't want to have parts laying around while I'm waiting for money and shipments.

the BBK you reference is from o2Starrider and some people here have said some nice things about his BBK in general, however I still suggest you read the Admin's build thread referenced above.YOU REALLY NEED TO DO THAT! When you do, you will see that performance CDIs & coils are a waste of money. The 8g rollers IMO are too much. I serviced one that had those. lowered it to 6.5g, and finally settled on 5g. The oil pump in your scoot is most likely good. That kit comes with a carb, cam, and variator- do you really need those? If I were making the choice of his offerings, this is his kit that I would buy. Because it does not have a bunch of things I would not need. www.ebay.com/itm/100cc-Big-Bore-Performance-Kit-69mm-Valves-139QMB-Chinese-Scooter-Parts-50mm-/161018740949My other choice would be John @ valley scooters is still having is 72cc bbk on sale, read about it here 49ccscoot.proboards.com/thread/10268/big-bore-kits-salei bought one of those from John and it was a decent product, but you can't use his composite head gasket, so be careful during disassembly not to damage yours so that you can reuse it. the one nagging question I have is "Do you have any crank, rod or bearing damage?"- you could listen to the engine with a stethoscope while it is running under load for bearing noises.

The reason I was looking at the kit I linked is because it includes the most parts. Based on what I've seen on my scooter, everything is just dirt cheap quality. I would prefer to replace as much of the stock junk with parts of reasonable quality.
Does anybody know if the kits from o2Starrider come with screws to replace the cheap Chinese crap?

I purchased a 50mm BBK from o2starrider and was quite happy with what $55 got me. The only bolts that were included were exhaust studs. It came with a head, rocker arms, gaskets, copper exhaust gasket ring, carb jet (can't remember what size), roller weights and even a new oil pump!

I might go with the cheaper kit, just because it's more realistically possible.
I did some prep work today. Since my van has expired plates and no insurance, it's not going anywhere, but I figure it would make a safe storage place for any misc parts that I might have to put off re-assembling.
I don't want to leave anything laying around in the garage since it's packed to the gills with junk already. Things get moved around a lot in there, I would hate for any TaoTao parts to end up missing.
I have been reading "Project TaoTao". I'm up to page 25 now. The more info I see the more I'm inclined to think that my loss of power has more to do with the CVT system than the motor.
I had problems with the rollers wearing down flat not long after I purchased it. It's been a while since I took the cover off and had a look inside the CVT case. Most likely it's got oil splattered all over from my random leaks. I wouldn't be surprised if getting my scoot road worthy, at least on a temporary basis, might just be a matter of cleaning things up in there.
Don't know why I haven't thought of it before..

Well I finally got around to taking things apart and getting a look at what's going on.
The white palstic fan that sits on the variator to force air around inside the CVT has come off and was inside knocking around. It's shredded with little white plastic chunks everywhere.
Everything else is caked in oily sludge but otherwise seems to be in good running condition.

I cleaned everything out, and put it back together without the fan for now. Surprisingly it didn't make much of a difference. The RPMs were a bit high taking off, which I think is how it normally runs. But otherwise it seems to have about the same power.
I opened up the air box to see what was going on in there, it was dripping wet with some kind of liquid that stank like rubbing alcohol. I can't think of any reason why it would smell like that. The moisture could be explained by all the rain we had yesterday though.
