Well I wrung out the foam air filter, towel dried it and popped it back in. It's running a whole lot better now, it's not struggling to reach 20mph anymore, but it still seems to be a bit underpowered compared to usual.
Right now I have 6.5g sliders in it. Originally I think it had 8g rollers with a bunch of flat spots.
RPMs WOT from dead stop seem normal, but as soon as I get about a foot or 2 from dead stop, the RPMs spike up, then slow down as I gain speed until it seems the belt reaches the top at about 20-25mph when it continues to go up. Maybe I should go for some lighter sliders. The belt has never been replaced. I'm sure it's worn down to the point where it's not going all the way out.
I might not be able to spend any money on it just right now. Plans have changed a bit and I might be moving to Fountain, CO. I'm trying to get my CDL and there's a decent truck driving school there, plus my uncle and grandfather live there and offered to put me up while I take classes. After I slap some temps on my van, pay up the balance for my trailer storage, and then gas, I might not have much left.

It's fairly normal for a bit of a rise and fall in RPM as the clutch grabs. If it seems excessive then check the clutch and bell.
Good luck with the moving and CDLs.

When I was a young buck I was training for my CDL Class A w/airbrakes with a moving co. I worked for (paid training!). I did weeks of practicing and even did some OTR trips driving with a licensed driver supervising. After all the training on our on-site course I was ready to take the test then they informed me they (the Co.) couldn't insure me as a driver because I had 6 pts on my driving record! I said "you should've told me that from the beginning I would've told you I had 6 points!". I never did get my CDL, but I remember the hardest part of the training was backing a @51 ft. trailer into a dock with the truck at a 90 degree angle to the trailer. I believe it's called the "90 degree dock manuever" but that was like 15 years ago. We had to do it ten times in a row without messing up!

Yeah I don't have any points on my DL. I finally said "Fuck It!", threw caution to the wind and went ahead and pulled the damn thing apart. Easier than I expected, and I'm fairly confident in being able to put it back together. I pulled the cylinder and the thing is toast. There's a big groove running all the way down the side of the cylinder, and 2 dings on both sides at about the top of the stroke. Looks like I will need a new cylinder and piston after all. I will post pics when I can get around to it. I also measured the diameter and it's 39mm, so it was indeed a stock 49cc. Some days I got a LOT of power out of the thing and suspected I might have bought a used Big Bore. Oh well, I guess I get to upgrade

Ouch. Looks like maybe it hasn't had circlips to hold the piston pin for a while/ever.

There was no pin on the side of the piston that's shown. I'm pretty sure that's the point of failure. Edit: Hah, you beat me to it. I need to refresh the page before posting a reply @ 90GTVert Judging by your vids, you're nowhere near Vegas. Otherwise I'm sure we could have this thing running in no time

I managed to make another hundred bucks working last night. So the BBK is within my budget now I will most likely be ordering the kit on sale from valleyscooter. I cleaned up the head and inspected it a bit. It looks like my exhaust valve is burned out, like I originally thought. I think it burned out because I was losing most of my compression around the sides of the cylinder.

That explains the "Smokes a lot and lack of power"
I have had good results installing new valves in used 50 and 150cc heads on several occasions when the valve seats had zero pitting in them but if the BBK comes with a head then you won't need to hassle with that.

Dang man don't that cylinder look nasty. But on the bright side you now know the problem and are able to fix it. Good luck mate.

It's not really a matter of being able to fix it. I'm just trying to figure it out as I go along. So far I don't think this is going to be that difficult or complicated. Grats on the 500th post by the way

I got the parts in today. Ordered a new head since it came with the valves at a pretty good price. Also got 2 main jets, different sizes, so I might be able to get this thing tuned. And a new variator belt. All for $79.
There's an extra port or something, not sure what to call it, but it runs from behind the exhaust valve out to the edge of the head. There's nothing like that on the old head. Not sure what to think of it. Should I just use the old head with the new valves?.

Sounds like maybe you got an emissions style head. Enviromoto has block off plates super cheap right now, or you can make your own. Use some copper high temp RTV to seal it. You'll need a couple of M6x1.0 bolts as well, which shouldn't be too tough to find at a hardware store. enviromoto.ecrater.com/p/21776272/gy6-egr-blockoff-plate

I would go with the new head and a block off plate. It doesn't have to be pretty to work. I made this one in about 5 minutes back in the day.
