Hi everyone im new to the forum and i have a 2013 Tao Tao 50, its in rather rough condition cosmetically considering its been laid down a couple of times but other than that the thing rides like a champ. My only worry is that running the engine with no muffler will cause critical engine damage. With that being said ive been riding on these conditions for about 2 months witk no problems. The reason i think this is is cause i have 80% of the pipe still there and it has enough back pressure to not burn up the valve. Tell me what yall think

Your neighbors must really love you.
You might still burn your valves like that, i would not chance it.

well my rule of thumb on one hand is... its the diameter of the headpipe that dictates the velocity, and for the most part, the scavenging effect (4 stroke exhausts do serve a purpose - cough cough @ a couple of you 2 strokers with the total length setting up the standing wave to some optimal whatever... which on such small engines, i question whether any difference is even noticeable without dynotesting/etc. a muffler/baffle does serve the purpose of preventing the exhaust from drawing fresh air when (1) you deccelerate.. aka 'pop pop! pop pop pop!' and also (2) usually somewhere in the rpm band where the waves sync up and the throttle then develops a flat spot, say for example some may say 'theres a hole in my power right around 4000 rpm, power just falls off, it comes back around 5k tho' neither of those two are really detrimental i would not say. especially with these pair valve setups that draw fresh air to help the cat burn. i think as long as youre not running lean with it straight, its probably not going to kill anything. heck tho for the money, its cheap enuff to either buy a small muffler, or even make one out of a short section of 2 inch scrap exhaust pipe and a reducer fitting if u can find one that works. it would not run much leaner without muffler vs with, with the stock exhaust header. if you swapped to a larger diameter pipe, you would need to both upjet and really consider adding a baffle or something to give it more backpressure, as the larger the pipe diameter, the slower the velocity of that exhaust, it needs more help to push and scavenge.

Thanks for the info. To actually install a muffler properly i need to drill and retap the muffler mounting holes and i also need a new muffler. The old one got ripped off from poor road conditions and broke off were the muffler is welded to the pipe. It also broke one stud and ripped yhe threads out of the other. This is the second muffler its ruined. And i really dont ride the bike that hard. We just have shitty roads

Allthough being heard on the road has definitely changed the way people respect me on the road so if i do install a new muffler its going to be high performance
