I have a 2011 VIP 50cc scooter. It only has 100 miles on it. I bought it not running for cheap. It has issues starting. Forget kickstarting it, or just with the battery. You have to jump it with a car and crank and crank and crank forever and then it will finally start. The whole time you are cranking it, it will kinda sputter and smell like gas. Once it gets started tho, it will idle and drive real nice. But if you let it die or shut it off, forget about starting it again, you have to jump it and go through the same long cranking process again. Now i dont think this would have anything to do with it, but I live in CT and its really cold. About 20 degrees for the past few days but i dont think that should matter. I have a 150 the starts no problem in the cold. Things I've already done, checked for spark (has good spark), checked compression (150psi), new spark plug (it is wet with gas when i pull it out, cleaned the carb well, new cdi, new coil, adjusted valves to .004 and .005'', checked timing marks and camshaft, checked for vacuum leaks. Seems like it has everything it needs to run. Any insight would be greatly appreciated .

Check the bowl float as well. It could be flooding out due to it not sitting properly. I noticed the one I am working on flooding out and checked the float bowl and it wasn't set properly. That's my $.02

makes sense to put a bigger slow jet but it wont even start with the throttle wide open or if i give it a sniff of ether. It sputters but it just seems like the timing isn't right or something, but it is(checked flywheel key too).

The plug being wet could be a sign of flooding. I noticed it with my solana as well as noticed gas going up the hose to the airbox. The solana wasn't wanting to start and when it did it would sputter not to mention I'm having trouble getting it to run exactly right now due to a 130 main jet in it. I adjusted the float earlier today and hope it doesn't flood on me again.

check your valve lash on the compression stroke right?

No check it at top dead center.

I forgot about that. I'm tired right now and in a bit of knee pain so I easily forget stuff

It's gotta be a tight valve. You adjust the valves with the cam in this position. It's TDC which is neither a compression stroke or an exhaust stroke. It's TDC. You can rotate the engine with a socket on the center of the fan. Easy does it! It's plastic. Removing the spark plug helps.

Yeah it lines up right after the compression stroke but not during it so why confuse people? It's TDC. The piston is at the top of it's stroke. daath may already know all about it anyway..

Yeah I do. I'm tired been up all day in pain and looking at getting back to work on the solana in the morning. I'm also thinking about asking the guy around the corner who ha a 250 tarped up if he wants to part with it and if he does I'll have a flip scooter on my hands after I get done getting the solana back up and running.
