My buddy just bought a used taotao 49cc scooter, its a 2014 and has about 1500 miles on it. He got it 2 days ago and the first day it ran fine, then it sat for 2 days and now it wont start. The electric starter wont do anything at all and we are holding the left brake lever in while we are trying to start it, the side kickstand is not down, the kill switch is in correct position, The battery is charged it has been on the charger for quite awhile and when you turn the key on the turnsignals and brake lights work fine. The fuse by the battery has been checked and even tried another fuse but that didnt help. The starter just wont engage for some reason. we have tried using the kick starter to no avail. I have verified its getting gas to the carb , I have verified its getting spark to the sparkplug but it just wont start. I tried using another CDI that i have and that didnt help. Its got fuel, spark and compression it just wont kickstart with the kickstarter and the electric starter doesnt do anything when you hit the starter button. Any Idea's? ??

Trace the red wire from the battery to the starter relay. Slip the rubber boots off the two main poles on the relay and touch something metal like a wrench or screwdriver across the two poles to bypass/bridge the relay. If the starter turns when you do this then the relay may have gone bad. To check the relay, test for 12VDC between ground/frame and the second pole on the relay with the wire leading to the starter motor with the key on, brake lever squeezed and the start button pushed in. If no voltage present there then un-plug the small two pin connector that goes to the relay and check for 12VDC at the scooter side of that connection with the key on brake lever squeezed and the start button pushed. You can wrap a strap or tape around the brake lever and the start button so all you have to do is turn the key on to test if you don't have a helper. If there is voltage there then the relay is bad. Some scooters won't start if the brake light bulb is fried. Not sure about yours. Relay: Be careful with that kick starter. They will break if you kick them too hard. Oh I forgot to tell you to check the brake light switches on the handle bars for continuity if you can't find voltage. Sometimes spraying a little WD40 into the start button itself will achieve a miracle.
Sometimes the left brake lever switch will fail but the right one is fine. You can use either side to start the engine.
