Could someone tell me what this small black box is? A metal pipe that branches off the exhaust goes into it and a hose comes out and disappears somewhere. Thanks as always

That is the SAIS/PAIR reed valve gizmo that is for smog/emissions control. It injects air into the exhaust stream blah blah blah. It's an unnecessary component that can be removed but you have to plug off that tube coming off the pipe. The large rubber tube runs to a canister that has a vacuum line that hooks to the intake so that port needs to be plugged off as well.
Many models have that reed assy. attached to the valve cover and the reed is connected via a metal tube to a port on the cylinder head to do the same thing.

I've seen posts where a guy will cut that small tube completely off the exhaust pipe and then weld the hole shut so it looks clean.
