I have a 2013 50cc Thunder with about 1000 miles on it. It has stopped going over 20mph and shuts off when I let off the throttle completely. However, I have been able to turn the scooter on and let it idle on its own, but even then it sometimes shuts off. It did this for a while so I replaced the carburetor and it made zero difference. Any ideas?

you should check the valve lash, a lot of the taotao engines have valves that are too tight and that will affect how it runs. make sure you have no vacuum leaks, the thunder has a lot of pollution control and a lot of vacuum lines.

I second the valve check.
I don't think these small motors should go much over 1000 miles without rechecking the valves.

Okay so today I got a feeler gauge and set the valves to .003, then I cranked up the scooter and it sounded much better. I gave it a little throttle and it began bogging down and shut off. I turned it on again and adjusted the mix and throttle screws and it would idle forever, but the minute I gave it any throttle it tried to die. I couldn't find any vaccum leaks so I am not sure what is next. The gas lines are flowing well so I don't know what the problem is. Once again any more ideas? Did I set the valves correctly at .003? Thanks for your time!

.003 is what I set 'em at... Maybe it's a carb float problem? The inlet could be clogged, maybe fuel trickles into the carb enough for idle but not enough for any throttle... just some ideas..

Might try the old carb on it now that you have the valves adjusted. Maybe a jetting issue on the new carb.

If ur neq xarb doing the samething then its not ur carb.try changing ur spark plug.probably it can handle ur idle oil but when u gas for more ur plug can not handlle that much oil and shut down because its probably on its way.I run those iridium needle spakplugs with a orange higher voltage coil to insure enough and good spark!!!!
