Does anybody know what the tube coming off my exhaust before the expansion chamber is for?? Is is necessary or a restriction?

I've seen that tube, but not usually on expansion chambers- usually stock exhausts... It's not necessary but the performance gain probably won't be noticed. Most folks (including myself) cut it off flush and weld/epoxy the hole shut.

Usually feeds air to the cat converter on a stock pipe Sent from my SPH-L720 using proboards Absolutely! The cat only works well at high temperatures, and by feeding air into the exhaust manifold, this raises the temperature of the exhaust gasses. The general view amongst the tuning community is that it adversely affects the performance of the exhaust frequency....... hence why you will very often see this pipe flattened and welded shut. The MX50 I bought was like this, and so too the FE53.

Im still down with the tube being a cheap way to cleanup final tailpipe emissions to pass epa testing. . See that i had to put a twist in it!

If you follow the steel tube it connects via a fiber hose to a reed valve that allows air in between exhaust pulses.

Could be a reeCAT emissions system, I removed mine when I replaced the exhaust with a zx and blocked the opening in the airbox, didnt notice any difference apart from the sound a power gain from the zx

I had a bud weld shut the opening where the steel tube once lived. Got it very clean using a technique I learned from my Dad using coarse steel wool and 91% alcohol from CVS. Two coats of ceramic spray and installed it. Running SO good now. I want to remove it and go black stove paint as a top coat 'cause the seasoning of the ceramic was per the label. The color is yellow instead of orange in spots, but I certain it will make an excellent primer.
