Basically the valve head will have to come off to expose the piston. No reason at all to pull the head. One could get a ball-park piston TDC to compare to the flywheel mark using a piston stop and (crude from cardboard) degree wheel, a dial indicator with a roller tip, "feel" for it with a wood dowel/pencil/popsicle stick - even visually, with a good flashlight, may get ya' what you need to know. All sorts of possible ways to confirm without any major dis-assembly. Bob Or you could do it this way. I should have said "my preferred method is to" instead of "basically you will need to". I prefer to be able to see things well.

i dunno what to do with it. its the reason im selling it. i bet its a minor fix. that orange cdi ran just fine with the stock 49cc. 40-43mph Well..I have seen some Ebay and Amazon BBK's that folks bring to me to install..and the piston fit as well as ring gap was ATROCIOUS!... Both piston and rings were way small or the cylinder bored too large.. I didn't even install them after checking piston fit and ring gap.. I had them send them back..

scooter1 with photos. same "identical" scooter two, lines tdc for flywheel n cam. And I was right, I am just quoting myself. 2 things.. 1. Yes your timing is way off.. 2. See that orange 'performance' CDI? Every time somebody has me put one of those in for them...starting is hard and they actually lose top speed. I think those just suck and are a gimmick..either that or their QC is non existent.. i just tried the stock cdi, same results. 33mph.

Not sure how it would help ya..unless your top dead center mark is stamped incorrectly. But in the pics..it is plain to see that your timing mark is about 20 degrees off from where it should line up. So set the flywheel so the 'T' lines up with the mark on the engine case..set your cam from there.. Then give that a try.. Glenn

This is what we have been trying to tell you is the problem. The new mechanic sounds like he might have some actual experience. That's probably all that's wrong with it. It's a really simple fix. I'll give you $20 for that scooter man......
