Hey guys, Im kinda new to the scooter world and have been searching all over the internet for a answer to my problem. I have a 50cc "Malibu" scooter, the typical Chinese set up. I installed a 100cc bbk in it today with a A9 cam. Well when I fired it up a horrible grinding noise started coming from the flywheel and it even threw some sparks from it. When I turn the flywheel by hand I can feel something grinding and its hard to turn. I just dont understand how installing the bbk and cam could cause this. I tried taking the flywheel off but I do not have a puller and it got dark on me so Im going to try again in the morning. Only thing I can think of that could of caused it is that on my A9 cam there isnt a large hole up top for timing mark. There is a "A9" stamped and the two smaller holes, so I aligned the "A9" up top with the two smaller holes in line with the edge of the head. The rest of the cam has a bunch of holes all along the bottom, but nothing like the stock holes. Is that correct? The "A9" is the top? Anyone have any idea what could of went wrong? Im truly stumped and frustrated! Really need some good advice as I cant find anything online about the flywheel grinding.

Welcome to the forum. The "A-9" logo goes on the bottom. There's a smaller hole in the middle of the bigger ones. That's your TDC mark. You have it upside down. As far as the grinding from the flywheel....I have no clue. You didn't mess with any of that? You only installed the BBK and the A9 right?

Did you install the tensioner right?

Hey thanks for the tdc info on the cam, I have it 180 out. Will fix that first thing in the morning. No, didnt touch the flywheel except to move it to my tdc mark. I was very careful not to set any bolts, nuts or anything on top of bike while I was working on it as not to lose anything of drop anything down in frame or motor. Im pretty OCD about being organized like that. Could the extra compression/power caused something to break and grind? Its weird because I can feel it rubbing the flywheel case, like the stator is rubbing all of sudden.

The tensioner, I bolted the base on, pushed tensioner all the way in, installed spring and top bolt, felt it expand, snugged everything down. Everything felt right.

I've never heard of anything like that happening. Did the scooter actually start up and run? Did you tighten the tensioner assembly back in? I am not really sure why the flywheel would have been affected at all.
Maybe something else is grinding and it feels like it's coming from that area? I'm not sure. Can you take a video of it? That would help a lot.

About the grinding noises, You arent missing any bolts or nuts by any change?

Yup, it fired right up, then five seconds later sparks and grinding from the flywheel. Tightened the cam chain tensioner assembly nice and snug. Im thinking it probably isnt related to the bbk. Like one of those things where you changed a tire, start it up and then the headlight blows kinda thing. Is it possible the stator slipped some and is grinding?

No, not missing bolts lol. When I take them out I lay them all out on a towel or screw the ones I can back in original bolt holes to keep up with them. I can take a video tomorrow, but kinda even hate to turn the motor over, Im sure its chewing something up in there pretty bad.
Something MUST have fallen inside it, some kind of small clip off of frame maybe. Now the fun part tomorrow will be getting that flywheel off without a puller!
I bought it used for a hundred bucks, its a year old with 1000 or so miles on it. Have replaced carb, belt, clutch, variator, rollers, light bulbs. Kinda frustrating because I really need this for daily transportation so Im trying to get it tip top condition.

Your best bet would be to take off the fly wheel and look. If something got in there, or got out of wack in there, in might cost you a new stator.

Okay, Ill keep ya'll updated, will give it another go tomorrow and take pictures of any problems I see. May have to go get a flywheel puller and do the "it doesnt fit I need to return this" routine on it as Im broke from all the money I dumped into this thing this week. But good news is my brother has a parts scooter with stator if I need it.

I would definitely inspect it before trying to start it again. Those pullers are cheap man. Ebay like $9
