After taking a short ride, I noticed some gear oil leaking from between the rim and the engine case. I took off the left side cover and everything was dry. I am thinking that the axle seal will have to be replaced, but if I have to take the transmission apart, I may as well replace all of the bearings. The Derbi engine repair manual lists the bearing sizes but does not list the 2 seal sizes.I have looked everywhere on line that I can think of. I probably could take a chance and hope that there are still readable numbers on the seals, but I was hoping to get all of the parts I need prior to disassembling the tranny. It is a 1998 Derbi Hunter with the Spanish Morini engine used until mid 2002 when Piaggio purchased the company. Can anyone help me to find these seal sizes?

Thanks. I need 2 seals and if my calculations are right by using the bearing sizes they are i.d.20mm x o.d. 47mm. I am assuming the thickness is 7mm. This is purely a guess. I do have the original part numbers but I can not cross- reference them and they don't give you the dimensions.

Make certain the gear case is not over filled,if so they will leak past the shaft seals...

I drained and refilled the tranny with 110 ccs of gear oil like it says on the rear of the engine case. I know a lot of people overfill the tranny. My father-in-law was filling his Zuma clear to the top and couldn't figure out why it was blowing it out the overflow. Lol Thanks for the reply.

Could be the bearing(s) are getting sloppy and that's what causing the leak. When a shaft bearing starts going bad and gets sloppy then the seal is actually flexing any time the shaft wobbles and at high speed that wobble means that the seal has to become an ellipse instead of a circle.

Thanks Spaz. I appreciate your help, but those people are crooks!!! For 2 seals it would calculate to $22 and that doesn't include shipping costs!!! I am hoping that I can figure out the dimensions of the seals and purchase them locally.

Don't the old seals have some numbers and/or dimensions stamped on them?

I really don't want to tear it apart until I have all of the bearings and seals. I was hoping to get a cross reference from the original part #s. The original #s are 00G02401381 and 00G02802471. I got the numbers from Fowler U.K.

You're prolly gonna have to bite the bullet and tear it apart to read the numbers on the old seals. You might get lucky and remove the trans cover with the gasket remaining intact so you can clean it and re-use it til you get new seals and then install a new gasket if need be.

I think I may have over filled the tranny a little bit. The leak appears to have stopped. Now my concern is the amount of gear whine that I am experiencing. It has done it since I have owned it and the tranny has about 9000km on it. Should I be worried about the whine? I was thinking about replacing the gear oil with a heavier oil or even adding some Lucas to the gearbox. Any suggestions or tips?

Some gear designs will always whine so if it's done it for 9000km and you don't have any other symptoms I wouldn't worry about it.
