:help: My sons 50cc Adly scooter has become hard to start when its cold. When the scooter warms up, it starts fine. I have changed the choke with no help. My next guess would be the stator.... Any other Ideas? :help:

The stator definitely would not be my next swap. I'd adjust the idle mixture first. You have to get it started and let it warm up first. Then adjust the mixture screw to achieve the highest RPM. Then turn the mixture screw 1/8 turn in to be sure you are on the safe side (rich). Adjust the idle speed if necessary. That probably won't get it, but it might, it's free, and it's a good thing to do on occasion anyway. The next thing I'd check is the spark plug. See if it is wet or dry or fouled etc... I prefer to use iridium plugs for their superior cold starting ability, although if everything's right they are not necessary.
Also, if it is harder to start from slower cranking, check the battery voltage. Charge if needed.
Start there before spending more money.

That is where I would start too. If that doesn't work, try taking off all of the plastics and check all of the wiring connections carefully. It is also free and I just had a friend that was having intermittent starting problems. They replaced the CDI twice, the stator, the coil, etc. and after a lot of money and hours of labor, turned out to be just a bad connection.

With the help of a few squirts of starting fluid, I can get the motor to normal temps. When its warm, I can stop and start it all day long with no problem. I checked the old choke with a ohm meter and it tested fine so I was reluctant to order the new one. Advice from other forums had me swapping the choke. The wire coming from the motor to the choke is dead when sitting or when the motor is running. Thats what leads me to the stator. I will check all the free stuff when I get home from work today. I just wanted to expand the explanation. Thanx for all the help guys!

sounds like you've got a leak in the cases somewhere if it starts fine with starting fluid. check your intake and reeds for cracks or leaks. sounds like you don't have any vacuum for the petcock to deliver fuel.

Pull the carb and clean out the idle and main jets. Also install a new spark plug because you never know. When the choke coil burns out the choke fails to turn off, not on, so it's not likely your problem. Usually the problem is the choke fails to unchoke.

Ok, I found that the voltage going to the choke is AC, not DC so that explains not being able to read it. It reads fine on the AC side of the multimeter. I have removed and cleaned the carb, adjusted everything I could, checked all my electrical connections, removed and cleaned the petcock, made sure that all the fuel lines weren't plugged. Made sure the gas cap wasn't clogged but it is still tough to start . The plug was a little wet. In the morning, when I try to start it, it starts but doesn't stay running long. The scooter has just over 200 miles on it.

My scooter is the same way. I have to manually choke it by plugging the intake hole on the air box with my finger while I start it and leave it there for 20-30 seconds till the cylinder head gets hot and the juices start flowing. Then it's fine after that. Try it! I always let it warm up for a few minutes before I take off on it.

I just swapped out the carb on my scooter from an 18mm to a 20mm.
Started absolutely perfect every time with the 18mm.
Now I'm struggling to get it started with the new 20mm carb.
I did find the enricher broken (cracked so it was at an angle) (Yes, on my brand new carb) so I replaced it but so far no improvement.
So in this case, it's absolutely the brand new carb. I did get it started last night and it drove just fine once warmed up and would start fine. But cold...wow...huge problems.
Will post back what I find.
