As you can see from the pictures one of the clips came off while riding. Something (probably the clip, but how?) has eaten the clip recess much bigger than it's supposed to be Could this have something to do with the small end bearing being worn out or the wrist pin? Could the clip just snap on its own? Any ideas on what could have caused this would be appreciated The second image is what the recess should look like The last image has a little piece of the clip embedded into my cylinder

The clip will come off if installed wrong. The opening of the clip should be installed at either the 6 o'clock or 12 o'clock position. If they are in the 3o'clock or 9 o'clock position, the force of the piston going up and down may dislodge the circlip.

I can't remember which way it way they were because I opened/reassembled upper half +2000km ago. They were that ''Double G'' type if that makes any sense Im just afraid that if it wasnt the clip itself, my new malossi cylinder kit might do this too

Sorry for your loss. I hate that a little 62¢ part can ruin an entire top end.
I always install them with the open part facing the crank (6 o'clock) so the clip will want to expand in the groove on the power stroke but I have had them come out that way so not sure if it really matters.
I have read post from guys saying they put Loctite on the clips after they are installed. Never did it myself but I assume they used brake cleaner, carb cleaner or starting fluid to clean the piston/clip of any oils so the Loctite will stick well. I can't remember if it was the red or blue they recommended.
The one and only rule I have is that you can't bend the clips and then bend them back and expect them to hold. Once they are bent they are toast

Caused by inertia. Look it up. The clip may not have been tight enough.
