Hello I have a 1998 Yamaha BWS 50 I have starting issues, turns out to be a number of problems....battery was weak (replaced) the starter was toast (replaced) Still won't start so I will have to dig deeper. I hope you guys will beable to quide me. This is what happens now........with the electric start you hear the usually chug chug trying to start then I hear a metalic like sound, a grind and it stops. Using the kick start it binds after three or four kicks I see on a few web sites that there is possibly a starter clutch.....could this be the problem? I am guessing that the piston rings and such are not the problem but I am no expert on this. Any suggestions appreciated.

Any pictures you can upload along the way helps. But I would start with your kick start since you said it's binding. Have you opened up your cvt? Or is it binding more from the inside like your crank? Sounds like something's wrong with your electric start. So focus more on your probable way of starting first till you can identify and fix your problem with electric start. Once you get your kick start free. Check spark, check that gas is getting to your carb and plug, air, etc. You believe it's not your piston and rings but check for compression. If you don't have a compression gauge. Take your spark plug out. Put your thumb or fattest finger (have someone help you) over the spark plug hole and "somehow"( if no helper) kick the engine over at the same time. If your thumb or finger gets pushed away, harder the better. Than you have compression. But a compression gauge is ideal.

Take off the CVT cover then try electric start, if it kicks over fine then I imagine its part of the kickstart mechanism in the CVT cover that is the problem. If it still does it with the case off, move on to the start clutch

pardon my ignorance...what difference does it make if the cover is on or off?

pardon my ignorance...what difference does it make if the cover is on or off? Having the CVT cover off eliminates the possibilities of the Kickstart mechanism being partially engaged, causing binding or the metallic sound you are hearing.
