So I was poking around in my CVT for the first time and there's a pickup coil (same as used for the stator) in there, it has a cut wire on it so it's not doing anything, what purpose would this have served?

Give me an hour and I'll take it apart but from what I remember there was a bump on the clutch bell and it was mounted to pick that up? But I don't know where the wire originally went. Here's a pic of the coil itself, I'll have to take the CVT apart in a bit to get a pic where it mounted, etc.

That's a pickup coil for sure. It certainly has no business on the cvt side of the motor though. Someone placed it there I'd bet and forgot about it.

There certainly was mount points for this guy, but the wire was just hanging out of the CVT cover (always wondered what the wire was), I can't think a dealer would just install random hardware though. The CVT cover is actually embossed with the dealers name on it.

It's used for monitoring the backwheel speed, and cutting the ignition when the maximum set speed is reach. It's a pretty common restriction actually. It restricts speed not engine rpm.

The more you know! Thanks, seems that the previous owner cut it at some point then.

Yep! Rev limiter. I have never seen one in person but I read about and saw a picture (below) of one on a scooter in England at least 8 years ago on another forum. To negate it you would simply remove it or just cut the wire and leave it. I assume the wire ran to the CDI and I assume you are also in the U.K. or Europe. I save any and all interesting pictures I see. Thanks for the pic of the clutch bell with the reluctor on it.

Yes the wire runs to the cdi. If you hook it up whit a switch you can turn the restriction on and off as you please. That may come in handy.

It is very handy my current cdi has a rev limiter built In as well and I installed a hidden switch to flip it on when I go by coppers and such, also a good alarm kinda,we'll it won't let a thief get very fast anyway!!!
