So today I decided to take my scooter on a decent trip round trip was 46 miles mostly back roads of fifty plus. Granted my scooters max right now seems to be 47 was 51 so I probably cruised right around forty and sometimes would give wot. What I noticed was a dramatic loss of power about ten miles into the trip each way especially up hills. So I came home ripped the valve cover off and checked it couldn't get a feeler in there if I wanted to. I adjusted them with the bbk to .005 and .006 and that was with the motor out. (I was anal about it I'm a millwright I checked then re checked then stuck the next size up as a no go. Five and six mil seem to work awesome. Yes I said mil that means .001. Anyhow as it says in the book and what 90gvert says wait until it cools down so I did I installed the new hardware for my kick start. Engine was still warm hotter than my body but not too hot to touch. feeler guages still did not go I adjusted them to my original settings 5 mil intake 6 mil exhaust I also had the t lined up and I verified the cam position fired it up exhaust sounded great like when I first built the motor but a horrible valve tap so I shut I down still didn't seem too hot started re adjusting from 4/5 then 3/4 then 2/3 mil I still herd a tap but it wasn't horrible so I took it for a spin it was bad horrible. Wtf? ? I just can't imagine 20 degrees give or take would expand the metal like that for a reading however we are talking about small parts lol not turbines at a nuclear power plant. Any suggestions would be awesome also any explanations would be great as well I assumed the valvle adjustments would be either dead on or larger than my original settings. Thank you for taking the time to read this I'm frustrated took a break and cleaned the house for my woman hahaha she doesn't know the reason why I did it otherwise I would be riding right now.

How many miles between the initial setting and the issue today and no clearance? Did you try it with a wider clearance? Any idea what compression is or how much RPM you're seeing when it's struggling?

At least 300 miles and I know you told me to recheck I figured it didnt matter have no idea about the rpms

Valve were like a hot dog in a hall way probably could slipped a .020 feeler in there. It pays to listen to the manual or you for that fact wait until the engine is completely cool. Leaned it out my jet from 100 to 90 still ran like shit I was bogging up hills and still wasn't getting full range of throttle brought the needle up that didn't help either then I thought of something that was in the back of my mind for a week when I got fifty it was with the new gears exhaust and stock rollers I was afraid of over revving the engine so I threw the heavier ones back in. So I swapped them again. I'm now getting full range of throttle I don't struggle up hills had the needle burried a couple times pick up is way better I dont here the noises I herd before like the engine was going to blow up going upa hill and 60kph i don't even need 3/4 throttle. Life is good!!!!!!!

When I first read the post, for some reason I thought you meant performance was "bad horrible" so I thought a compression test wouldn't be a terrible idea. Re-reading I guess you meant the valve noise. Glad you got it straight anyway.
