I know that you already have the rings on, but did you by chance try to get the rings into the bore before you put them onto the piston? Because I've had a set of rings that would not close all the way because they were too big. They would not go into that cylinder bore.

Spaz brings up a good point. You did measure the ring end gap I hope? I also had a bad set of rings. The first set that came with the kit had a top ring that needed 5 minutes of clean up work just to fit in the bore.

I tried for over an hour to try to get the piston into the cylinder. I don't agree. You need a ring compressor. I agree that you don't need a ring expander. I just don't see the point of struggling when you can do it with a tool much easier. I would've been better off never removing the cylinder. It would've been easier just to replace the valve head. I know people are trying to be helpful but doing this with a minimum of tools is not a good strategy. It turns it into a frustrating and time consuming effort that is not enjoyable at all. That's why they call them tools because they make the job easier overall.

I'm in the middle of doing this big bore kit. I am definitely better off leaving the 50cc head on and getting my money's worth of that cylinder until it wears out. Can't get the piston back in the head. This is not as easy as everyone says. You need special tools. It is possible guys that he has a ring (or two) that won't fit because they are too big and will not close... I suspect this might be the case because as everyone here says, they are easy to do. I actually brought this up on the very first page.

Seriously, swear to God, honestly, tell you the truth, no bullshit, it's easy to do without tools. The rings are probably too big. I remember now that it was the oil ring (wavy one) that was too big that I had the problem with.

The rings are not too big because I am using the original piston and cylinder. I was going to rebuild with the 72cc head but I couldn't get the piston off. Therefore, I decided to rebuild with the original parts except the valve head.

Given the circumstances, abort. I'll wait for the ring compressor to come in. You guys made sense on the ring expander but not on the ring compressor. There is no chamfer on the bottom of the cylinder which is where you need it if you want to slide the piston in without a ring compressor. Trying to compress the rings with your hand doesn't work. I tried it for an hour and it didn't work. Makes absolutely no sense not to use a ring compressor.

The first image is oriented with the top of the head shown. The top is the top in the picture and notice no chamfer. Sleeve should stick out the bottom. Second pic is the top of the head to the left and bottom to the right. The third is the bottom of the jug which is the direction the piston goes in. Bottom to top. Again if you have a ring that won't fit that's another problem. If you could take a picture of the jug it would help us a lot. I have never seen a chamfer on the top of the sleeve.
