I have a 2012 50cc stock Tao Tao. It was running great but started bogging down one day over night after humidity change. I can still hit 45 mph but it takes a lot longer to get there and bogs as it climbs to top speed. I'm also able to reach top speed now with about 3/4 throttle. The take-off is hardly affected. Starts slowing down around 20 - 25mph but will climb over time. When i put on center stand it bogs around 6000 rpms. I'm new to scooters and motors in general so I was looking for the best way to diagnose this problem. Dirty jets? too lean? intake leak? I'm thinking dirty carb/jets? Fuel delivery problem?

Usually if it acts up when it's very humid it means the scoot is running rich. If the humidity drops a lot and it runs poorly, then it may be lean. If it's been doing this for a while, even through various weather conditions, then the humidity may have been coincidental.

Thank you for your quick reply. I'm in Myrtle Beach and the humidity has been up and down constantly. Usually doesn't make a fuss though. I'm going to lean it out a bit and check back in. Can the jets be a possible factor? I thought since it was bogging at higher speed than maybe the main jet was clogged.

If you're primarily noticing symptoms from 3/4 to WOT, there's a good chance that something is up with your main jet. First step would be to clean the carb and make sure the jet is clear.

Should I tune the air/fuel mixture first or clean carb?

Well, the mixture screw should really only affect idle to 1/4 throttle. I think...

Cleaning the carb real good never hurts. A main jet with a tiny piece of grit half blocking it would be a problem.
I'm thinking maybe you have developed a small vacuum leak. Maybe the intake is loose. Check it out. Could a small hole/tear in the diaphragm, a cracked vacuum hose (very common) or the intake rubber boot is starting to crack. I had one scooter that had a cracked intake boot that ran and idled great but would bog when you opened the throttle cause the crack held together when the vacuum was low. Twist the throttle and the crack opened up and bog city. Of course I figured it out after a couple of hours cleaning the carb twice and checking everything else.

After the hurricane passing (I live in Myrtle Beach) I was finally able to take the carb out only to realized it is a sealed carb! AAAHHH. So took it out, and douched it with a half a can of carb cleaner, stuck it back it and it runs perfect. Hoses all looked fine. You think it was gunk it the carb? I didn't do anything else to it. Couldn't get to the jets so I doubt that was the problem unless the carb cleaner douche somehow helped clean the jets. I want to buy a new unsealed carb so i can upjet and clean regularly. Anyone know where I can get a good quality yet cheap and unsealed carb? Saw em on ebay for $50. Thank you all for your help

Well, the mixture screw should really only affect idle to 1/4 throttle. I think... The mixture screw tunes the fuel/air ratio. The idle screw just pulls back or releases the throttle cable a little to regulate gas going in carb.

Funny thing. When I took it out a few days ago I'd to WOT and it would take off quick, bog down at 6300 rpms, and then sputter and sometimes catch and all my power came back until I was up to 45 again. I want to take a picture of my carb and see if anyone can point out if my carb has been modified. I took it to a dude who fixed it but I cant get a hold of him to ask what he's done. I;m new to this and extremely excited to learn and be active in this forum.

Sounds like it may have been at least partially the carb being dirty/clogged since it improved after cleaning. Any of the 18-20mm unsealed carbs should work alright and you should be able to get one for more like $20-30. The mix screw does adjust the air/fuel ratio (increases or decreases fuel delivery in this case), but as kag said it's job is mostly done by 1/4 throttle. It will only have a minor effect beyond there. The WOT issue could be CVT related. If it normally runs well at say 7500RPM-8500RPM and RPM drops to 6300, that's not helping at least. Could be a combo of carb and CVT tuning. Lots of help with both here : www.49ccscoot.com/faq/faq.htmlHaving trouble with posting pics? 49ccscoot.proboards.com/post/7984
