Hello, I have been fixing up an old scooter, which I have so far only been able to identify as some kind San Yang version of the Honda Lead AF 90.
After lots of cleaning and restoring, the scooter had been working well, starting riding and even going up to around 55km/h. It starts by kick only and runs without a battery at all, and has some odd wiring adjustments by previous owner.
Last night while taking it out for a plug chop test, after a while of riding fine, I accidentally hit the obsolete winker button, and since that moment (I assume, didn't happen before) the scooter has a very hard time starting, accelerating, keeping stable rpm. Is seems to show a mix of lean and rich symptoms. It is worth noting I was slowly adjusting the idle screws on carb during same period, but it did not occure to have too much influence. Another reason I assume electric gremlin is flickering of the meter lighting and headlights, which had not happened before. Meter didn't work at all, only headlight.

Update: without modifying anything I can get it to go, but only with very careful throttle control, after a few false starts I could get it going, slowly at first, but after very gently accelerating and decelerating as needed for a few hundred meters, it would finally accept regular throttle use.

You should not run the scooter without a battery. You may damage the stator. Even a dead battery is better than no battery at all.

If you're doing tuning passes, most likely you should be working with the main jet or needle. The mixture screw is for idle and just above idle primarily if all is working well. I'm thinking you may have an electrical issue and a separate tuning issue, because I'm not sure what you would have messed up by flicking that switch to cause the symptoms you've experienced. Perhaps try going through a more thorough tuning process : www.49ccscoot.com/faq/carbtune.html
