After recent repairs, the blue scoot sat for over a week. When I fired it up, it seems the belt is really slipping. There were black transfer marks on the center bearing and clutches. So I removed belt, clutches, bearings and cleaned all with brake clean. I used my air impact-gun to reassemble. I ran it for a few minutes on the stand (engaging both clutches), then re-tightened before installing the cover. It seemed to work great. BUT once I sat on the scoot and attempted to drive, it doesn't catch-and-go like it once did. I assume the belt is the problem??? If so, let me know the best belt (under $100) and any tips to make sure it is as tight as possible. Best Regards, -David

I have heard good things and have never had a problem with a gates powerlink belt. Some say for durability go with a kevlar belt. they are more expensive but still well below your $100 price mark. I suppose the most important thing is for you to get the correct size belt.

I've heard and experienced that pretty much anything other than a good ol' stock Bando belt is less than reliable. Be wary of super cheap fake Bando's on the Chickety China supplier sites...

Sounds like your belt might be the wrong size. Even a couple of mm's will cause your situation.
Bando & Gates are the 2 recommended brands. They last longer and are reasonably priced.
The Kevlar belts are good, if you live in a warm climate, but get really stiff when it's cold or sitting for a while. It takes time for a Kevlar belt to warm up and flex correctly.

I live in FL ... so I'll look for a Kevlar. I have the 139QMB engine with 10" wheels. Happen to know which belt, and a trustworthy seller?

For a 139QMB shortcase (10' wheels) the correct size is 669 18 30 (669mm long, 18mm wide, 30 degree slant to match the pulleys).
I just put Bando belts on both of my 2t's. An off brand belt might be marked correctly, but would still be incorrect size.
Scrappydogscooters.com and PartForScooters.com.
Parts for Scooters has a discount if you put 49ccScoot in the promo box. I think it's 10% off.
I've dealt with both sellers and have had very good experiences, none bad.
Link to the from the Home page of 49ccScoot.com, that way they know their ads are working and will continue to support the site.

Hey is that a "Big Chief" scooter in the center? and is it for sale in Spring Hill? and does it have a Minarelli Horizontal? Sorry for all the Q's but I been seeing one on CL and thinking about checking it out...

Way back in 2005 I got my first scooter. A JMstar 50cc 139QMB and it had a gates Powerlink that was stamped 669-18.1 That belt took me 12,000+ miles before it got really narrow from side wear so I lost top end speed so I changed it to a Gates 669-18-30 that lasted til I sold that scooter after an engine swap. Long story short, I still have that belt. I betcha it has a lotta miles left in it. It must be a Kevlar belt. Here's a pic of a belt just like it. Available online still today. www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=gates+powerlink+669+18.1&tbm=shop

Sorry for all the Q's but I been seeing one on CL and thinking about checking it out... Yes it is a Big Chief, 50cc two stroke, with about 800 miles BUT that's cool, I didn't know there was one on CL. Not sure about the Minarelli part but the tag says 50-QT2B. I picked this one up for song when the owner wiped out on his dirt-drive and broke the key in the ignition. Haven't had time to do anything but wash it yet, but if you want a project and don't mind driving to St. Augustine, maybe we could work out a deal? I was going to list it as-is for $150... If you can fix / show me how to fix my Roketa's front brakes, I'll sell it to you for half. Here are some pics: (BTW, wheels are nice, but still had dirt on them when I took the pics)

I'm sorry to break the news to you but that's not a 139QMB. It's a DE141QMB 2 stroke engine which has a chain drive and little to no tuning potential because there are no tuning parts for those out there short of a 60cc jug and piston. Below there are pics of the engine with the left side cover removed. It's full of oil in there and has a chain drive rather than a belt. The oil pump is under the rear oval-shaped cover. Thanks FOX, the belt is for the 4-stroke, 50cc Blue Roketa (139qmb). The Silver Big Chief scoot is a 2-stroke, I guess that looks like the one you just posted.

I was checking those pics (awesome btw) and wondered why the sprockets couldn't be changed like on a motorcycle? Seems that would be all u need to achieve higher top end, or faster acceleration.

If you could find sprockets or make some work, you could change the ratio for better acceleration or better top speed. The problem is that when you increase one, you decrease the other, since you're stuck in that ratio all of the time. If you geared it for a good takeoff, your top end would be limited. If you geared it for top end, it would take off slow and may not even be able to reach it's potential top speed, depending on engine output.

I dunno if I got a fake Powerlink or what, but mine was clearly in worse condition than the crappy belt my scooter came with after <50 miles. The side of the belt got kinda ripped up and worn down so my top speed was about 5MPH lower than normal. Now I have a Bando on it and so far so good.
