These kind of seem like the Chinese scooter kings under 1000 right now. I've noticed Rocketa 50 look like they come with a bit more power. I know it's all the same gy6 junk but the Rocketa probably has better jetting or head or something.. who knows! However I'm leaning towards the Tao Tao a little more even though it might not be the quickest under 1000 out the box. So, I know they're both the same chinese stuff gy6 qmb yada yada yada. So is there any reason to buy the Rocketa 50 over a Tao Tao? What's the most popular pick for tuners? Are the ergonomics on the Rocketa any better at all? What do you guys think?

Listing the specific models that you're comparing may help us give you better info.
In general, when you see that 2 Chinese scooters with the same engine platform list different power or speed figures, assume it's just reporting inaccuracies. Most will perform pretty similar. Some do have different gearing, but mostly they run about the same on average in stock form.

CHONGQING ASTRONAUTIC BASHAN MOTORCYCLE MFG CO LTD. makes Roketa and a few other "brands". I don't know who makes Taotao but the scooter bodies look identical to Roketa. I own a Taotao and a Linhai, they have the same body panels as well. The specs on Roketa sound too good to be true 3.3 hp versus 1.8 hp from Taotao, unless Taotao is underestimating their specs.
I would be surprised if they were made in the same factory, or one next door to each other. If you place a large enough order, 100 I think, they will put your name on the same scooters!

What's the most popular pick for tuners? So why not initially select at least a 125cc that would actually be compatible with typical metro traffic?
In the context of ergonomics . . a relatively flat seat enhances finding an optimal personal riding stance.
Include a used Yamaha Zuma 125 in your research.
Some scooter models offer outboard foot positions.

You can get a new 150cc Chinese scooter for under $1,000 or get a better quality used bike.
If you just want to avoid insurance and registration costs then you need to stay under 50cc. A GY6 is a GY6 for the most part.
I own three brands of GY6 based scooters. The Taotao and LinHai are nearly identical, only the wheels and speedometer are different.
My Veken is a totally different animal, 14" wheels with a hub motor to run on battery power.
Both designs perform similarly, same power and top speed. They both take the same performance upgrades with the same improvements. I know, I've done them on both.
I'm not the lightest guy in the world and the 49cc just didn't have quite enough power on hills. I only bought the first scooter to ride with my daughter when she bought one, now I'm hooked.
