I hit a bump that knocked some stuff loose, tightened it, but now I am running rich AND lean... the plug is a wet dark brown in some places, and at the tip, it is grey! GAH! How is this possible???

Sounds like a small air leak

Could be an air leak as suggested or maybe you knocked debris loose and a pilot or main jet is partially blocked.

I have checked the carb, all is as it should be. Vacuum line is fine (sprayed water on it). Reeds are fine, as far as I can tell.
so that was not it... I ordered some new gaskets and am going to pull the engine apart and give it a good cleaning and check the piston and rings... I am thinking it may be a bad gasket allowing air in, or a bad piston ring. So, I hope that will work.

Ok, so I can ride at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle and it stays fine (not rich or lean)... I will have to do this until I can get in the engine...

Does it happen to be lean at below that RPM and rich above? If so that would mean you probably need a smaller main and a larger pilot. That wouldn't explain why it would just start doing it after a bump though. :stumped:

it seems like it runs fin up to 3/4... past that it is like it's running lean, then when I hit 40, it bogs down like it's too rich... makes absolutly no sense to me, so I am just trying to do anything I can think of other than replace the entire engine.
