I’m not sure what this would prove but, have you tried flipping the key off and back on while the engine is acting up and the CVT is still locked up, would it run normally again then?

If you are really, REALLY cruising at WOT, you won't have vacuum to open the fuel valve, or it will be perhaps a bit too soft to allow good fuel flow, leading to running out of gas. over time, it may be slowly starving the carb & engine, and finally killing it. I would consider using a manual valve for testing at least, or connect a separate gravity tank and test running the same 'course' that will normally cause it to die. tom

Yesterday I dropped the needle to lean it out a bit (put the clip one position over middle) and it started happening to me too, it happens quite a lot until I gain some speed.

I would replace your petcock with a manual one as well as new fuel lines. The petcock may test fine but as an engine increases in RPM it has less draw on the vacuum line so a failing petcock would cut out on you. Most of us here eliminate the petcock and replace it with a manual one and an inline fuel filter just so that we can rule that out as a problem in the future.
