I bought a TaoTao ATM50-A1 from an older gentlemen and the front brake didn't work when I purchased it (which I used to lower the purchase price). So I took a look at the cover for the front assembly was missing, so I wrote off the entire assembly as contaminated and recently ordered a new assembly since I broke the rear brake lever when my bike slipped and fell. Well I just opened the assembly cover to inspect it before I try to take it and my tools outside in this cold weather. And there was a good amount of this sticky brown liquid inside and there is a bunch of crud inside of the assembly. Is this normal? Or do I just need to write off the entire assembly as contaminated and send it back to TaoTao's official parts distributor to be replaced? Imgur Album for Pictures of My Assembly: imgur.com/a/TggnL

Absolutely NOT normal. not normal to have anysort of gunk dirt or any grease etc INSIDE reservoir or caliber or anywhere in Fluid system. not even for Storage purpose.
china aluminium about always is a recycled Scrap aluminium, so to speak it aint pure aluminium, which makes it easy to Corrode with water/salt/various liquids....
there is possibility that somebody has used brake caliber seal "grease" on the Gap gasket...
if you'r going to use that Master cylinder/+ its brake line and Caliber. they all need to be dismantled fully and Flushed cleaned properly. mild mentioned SPECIAL grease may be used little bit on re-assembly, or brush stroke of clean brake fluid on Seals when making re-assembly.
take a carefull look if there is any so called "Aluminium Cancer" on the parts, any powder or Oxidation, based on photo alone there aint....in that case good Clean dismantle/re-assembly is good working fix.
2nd Point: what ever China made brake part(s), they SHOULD ALWAYS BE dismantled 1st, as often pistons are Scored scratched, Bore's have machining shrapnel, sharp edges etc fails on them. Caliber piston seals may be but On "wrong way around" or have surface scratch cut on them.....
it aint ever a Fix to juts Slap on a new Unit as is.
more than every 2nd china caliber has Shrapnel bore edges on them, poor machining. the Fluid pressure alone is enough to snap of a machining shrapnel that will Jamm piston(s) in fixed solid position, I.E brakes locked Active, or caliber piston wont Return fully and Brakes pads worn out....
as a mc-mechanic, also working on a bike breaker/china scoot+atv+pitbike dealer, ive handled enough China brake parts in category's Road Approved e-approved and none approved, being ATV and pitbike calibers are the worst ones, also point being many scooters use same brake calibers as various pitbikes...................

Brake fluid will absorb water like mad and If that cover was missing chances are real good the front brake system is crudded up from top to bottom. I suggest you replace the caliper, hose & the lever assy. Refill, bleed and go for a ride.
Enjoy your new scoot!

Flush with brakleen (spray brake cleaner) then flush a few times.with fresh fluid. & go from there.
