Hey All,
I've got a 50cc Chinese scooter and have recently been having a really rough idle and almost no acceleration when accelerating from a dead stop. I recently replaced the clutch and the scooter had been running fine for a while. A few weeks ago, the idle became very rough (shaking the scooter) and when I accelerate from a dead stop the engine seems to lag moving the scooter very slowly and not at all uphill for around 10 seconds until it gets up to normal riding speed.
When I put the scooter on the kickstand, the back wheel spins by itself. I adjusted the idle and fuel mixture and I eventually got the clutch to disengage. It didn't seem like an idle adjustment was the issue, it seemed like I had just released the clutch while messing with the idle.
The scooter then ran fine for a while, but then I came to a pretty quick stop at a red light using the rear brake and the issue returned. After dealing with the issue for another day, I seemed to had released the clutch again while riding and pumping the rear brake. Then, when I had to come to another quick stop using the rear brake, the issue returned.
Not sure if this is a clutch issue or variator issue or something else.
Any ideas on this?
Thanks,
Joe

When you take the CVT cover off notice if the drive belt is riding high in the rear pulley. If not you could focus on the rear clutch assembly first. If your takeoffs are really poor you could have a broken torque spring. The big long one. And if so it might be something like taking off in 3rd gear. So, maybe your new clutch has failed already. If you don't see anything as obvious as a low riding belt plan on taking the variator and the clutch apart to see what's going on in there that might need replacing. While you're at it how old is your belt, what's the width of it these days? It migh be time to replace that too. I'm betting on a bad clutch, torque driver assembly. Rough running is another problem. carb adjust, bad plug, valve adjust?
Good luck, Greg

It may be that the 'pilot jet' is clogged. It will cause stumbling, stalling, and a 'weak idle' if it is full of 'stuff'. I noted that the engine just didn't want to idle without starting to stumble, falter, and slow down, finally stopping. Removed the carb, pulled the pilot jet, and it was plugged. Idle is a LOT stronger now, and can be adjusted to slower rpms so the back wheel won't want to turn when on the stand. Otherwise, it would not idle slow enough to release the clutch... Worth a look if you note a weak idle. The carb will also cause acceleration issues if the pilot jet is compromised. tom
