Hello all I am new and need some help.. I am fixing a scooter for my neighbor that is quickly becoming a headache.. Here is what I have done so far: Drained the fuel tank- it had bad gas Removed and Cleaned the carb Replaced the choke. When I cleaned the fuel tank and carb the scooter ran great. I just had to manually choke it by covering the intake side of the carb with my hand. Then it would run and Idle fine. I figured that it needed a new choke so I ordered it. I installed the choke and now it will not run. I tried it hooked and unhooked up. I even took it out. I can get the motor to start but it bogs out and dies. It sounds like it is getting too much fuel.. Any suggestions??

Make sure you have the stock airbox installed or it won't run right without rejetting and adjustments. If it's not installed it's common for them to stall and bog.
Check the spark plug after it bogs out to see if it's wet so you can be sure that it's too much fuel.

When you cleaned the carb did you remove the jets and soak them in solvent and then blow them out real good with compressed air and then check them against a light to ensure there is no obstruction?? Is there rust in the tank from sitting? If so it will clog the jets. Just went through all that with my R4.

Thanks for the help.. The tank wasn't too rusty. I removed all of the jets and cleaned them with carb cleaner and blew them out. It didn't seem that they were clogged. I will try and get it to start then check the plug.

I would like to endorse what 90GTVert said. Two stroke carbs are not like 4 stroke carbs that are tolerant of "free flow" filters. Too much air means that you will run too lean and the scoot won't even start. And around here, the general concensus is that free flow filters (even with jetting and adjustments) don't give any gains over just removing the snorkel from the stock box. The stock box keeps noise levels down too.

To make things easier for myself - since I've yet to tune a scooter to run without a filter or with an "open filter" - I just use an airbox. Keeps is quieter, and I don't need to rejet my pilot circuit as most of the time I can jet it pretty easily with the mix screw, main jet, and needle jet.
