I just bought my first scooter. It's a Yamaha Vino 50. I bought it from a neighbor and it seemed to run fine but it just wouldn't go over 20MPH. He said that 6 years prior it was doing the same thing and he took it in for a carb adjustment and it worked fine. I took it to have it looked at and was told that the air filter had deteriorated and had been sucked into the carburetor. They want to do a fuel system clean and carb clean. Does this sound legit or should I seek a second opinion. Thanks for any input.

A 2T is a 2 Stroke motor, like a weedeater. A 4T is a four stroke motor like a car. Those 2T Vinos are pretty nice scoots.

They say it needs fuel system cleanout carb clean and I guess a couple parts for the carb. $300.

They say it needs fuel system cleanout carb clean and I guess a couple parts for the carb. $300. Sorry, I forgot to ask how many miles are on it? Post a picture of it if you can If you wish, we can likely guide you through a few things to try yourself first. Like draining the old fuel from the tank so you can add fresh fuel. Removing and cleaning the carb, installing a new air filter in the airbox. The Vinos can be a PITA to work on due to the body panels, but they run forever if taken care of.

Well, there's some good news. The scooter is at the repair shop so I can't take any pics. I did siphon out the old gas and add new. I added a little Seafoam as well. The scooter ran fine it just wouldn't go over 20MPH. I thought it would just be a simple carb adjust. If the price is not too far off I may just let them do it. I would love to learn how to work on it myself and was hoping that's what I could learn here. It is a fun little scooter at 20MPH so looking forward to getting it up to 45.

Might not be a fuel issue but the belt is worn down. If it runs fine but no speed then head towards the CVT and check the belt and replace with a new Yamaha one these things hate non-Yamaha belts.

That worries me because I'd hate to have them do this work only to find out it's something else. It's a legit place but it's one of the bigger shops. Any telltale signs that it might be the belt other than no speed?

If you want to eventually learn about you scoot and work on it yourself this is the perfect opportunity to do so. Like Tiny said it could be the belt or another part of the CVT. Knowing the mileage it has on it might give us some insight as to what the problem is.

Im thinking belt because ive owned a Vino for the last 5 years and when i rose it the first time the speed wouldn't go past 50kph. Replaced the belt and speed jumped up to around 70kph then shredded belt in 1000km like i said Yamaha's hate non-yamaha belts. Belt should be 14.1mm wide minimum before replacement i believe with a new belt at 14.7mm.

Thank you guys for all of the info. Is the belt something that I could change myself? I'm fairly competent.
