If your scooter had a gearbox and a you could change cogs , it would be called a motorcycle ! lol Seriously if it had all that your scooter would do 80 mph Vespas have a gearbox and clutch. And I think 80 is actually achievable on one. I think they're 4 speed. And they're definitely scooters 80 is easy on a p200, harder on the smaller bikes. The 50cc smallies are depressingly slow stock. They're old old tech though and built for low end grunt. My smallie did 50 when it still ran, it's a bit terrifying at that speed.

Ok wet it just sucked taking the wheel off and working in that confined space .In 2012 they had some clutch issues warranty issues and guess what everyone we had in the shop had the problem it was like five of them . That started my dislike for them then a wiring issue burning down grounds. Then the lighting issues O man one thing after another i was done .. It they are cool looking but o man a pain for me .. In Vegas we have the High Roller rally every year and most of the Vespa owners bring more spare parts than i have ever seen . lol Cool scoots i am just not into them that's all ... I will sell you all my stella tools lol I have all of them from Genuine lol

Can you imagine shifting that thing? Got a power band between 12378 rpm and 12416 rpm that you have to stay in or you stumble, all while jockeying for position on the track.

This is a Honda RC116 it is a four stroke 50cc twin. Made 15 horsepower at 23,500 rpm. One of the winningest 50cc GP bikes ever. When I went to Honda tech school in 1972 they had one on display, and an engine apart and laid out in a glass case. That motor is like jewelry. 4 valves per cylinder DOHC gear drive cams, 8 or 9 speed depending on how it was set up.

They had an AVERAGE SPEED of 90mph around the Isle of Mann in the 60’s and used bicycle RIM BRAKES!!!! Simply amazing machines!

i more of less used these things as a reference years ago when i was trying to keep my bike legal at a glance and was running some 5-8-10 hp cylinders that were 50c. did alot of reading and yes the gears helped a bit as less rotating mass vs all of our large diameter cvt parts and those usually had straight cut gears which are noisy but i think sounds cool. skinny tires and light weight bikes can go pretty fast but would be so sketchy for me in a corner as i like contact area but thats not what wins those kinds of races. add that with no road laws to follow double the rpms these scoots make and less of a power gap with more than 1 cylinder and you have some pretty impressive speeds. also think about all of the barriers around most race tracks and the banked walls ive walked a few and was startled by the stillness some of them had. it was pretty settling for the mind until i started thinking of all the things that must have traveled on there.
in my 50cc days i was able to get to around 60mph road speed reliably but had a stock crank and was afraid to go over 10k rpms even though it turns out my crank was prolly rated for 12k but hey it doesnt matter now. with those little baby pistons it takes a while to get up to speed and tuning is super finnicky even for a 2 stroke and cooling is never enough unless you go to water cooled and i didnt until much later.
