I just finished building my motor and now it won't start! :zap2:
Minarelli lc engine Malossi MHR 70cc Full circle crank No leaks Spark Fuel Should have compression(just built) Motor turns over with no problems Cvt is good
It turns over but when it tries to start it makes a grinding noise. Sounds like it is coming from around the starter gears. Acts like something is keeping it from starting. I even tried spraying starting fluid into the cylinder to see if it was the fuel but it does the same thing! :banghead:
I just want to hear this thing run! It's been sitting for months!
Please help! :sos: Thanks :thumb:

Do you have a kick starter? What does that do? I don't suppose you could do a short video with sound and post it? Have you checked the gears on the starter shaft etc.? Is started bolted in tight? have you done any mods to the front pulley/variator?

in addition to above, is the bendix sticking? (not releasing)

I tried the kickstart with starting fluid. It fired right up and then died.
So, I need a new battery I guess, and It's not getting fuel. Fuel is getting to the carb but not the cylinder for some reason.
I think the noise was because it wasn't turning over fast enough. I forgot to tell you that it was turning slow.
Not sure why Its not getting fuel. I cleaned the carb. It's got an 80 jet. It has a pollini reed cage with the blue reeds. I made a 5mm spacer for the reed cage. The reeds looked good when I installed them. I took out the oil system and pre-mixed a gallon earlier today. I cleaned the tank and vacuum petcock before I filled it.
I'm at a loss here. :dunno:

I assume your exhaust is not stopped up?

:welcome: to the forum. Sounds like it will be a fun setup once you get it going.
Have you checked the float height?

in addition to above, is the bendix sticking? (not releasing) 2 stroke Minarellis don't have a bendix like the 50cc 4T's Speedy. They have a starter clutch. It works kinda like a ratchet in that it only grabs in one direction and slips in the other direction. It's behind the variator.

Thanks, this forum is awesome!
I'll check the float level. The scooter ran before it was taken apart and the carb was not touched. I cleaned it but didn't adjust anything. I don't know why its not getting fuel? :dunno:
The starter clutch is greased and working good. I checked it like 20 times! I think the battery is too low to spin the engine fast enough. I'm going to pick up a new one today.
I want to ride this thing so bad! :scoot:
Thanks everybody! :thumb:

Do you have the air filter box installed or is the back of the carb open?

Just for the heck of it, you could try holding your hand firmly over the inlet of the carb when attempting to start it. I've had times when I can't get them to pick up fuel and I do that and it seems to give the carb a jump start. Might do nothing at all for you, but it only takes a minute and you'll be able to feel if your engine is creating good vacuum while you do it.

I just got back from getting a new battery.
I have an aftermarket foam filter. I will try the hand thing.
I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks

I did a compression test for the heck of it. I got 150psi. What should I have?

Not sure what they want out of that kit, but that's more than enough to start.

What kind of enricher (choke, in the vernacular) do you have? Auto or manual?

Manual choke. Push the little lever on the handle and in comes back up. Should I be holding it down?
I'm getting fuel to the carb. I cleaned it again and made sure that the jets were clear. the bowl was full when I opened it. Float looked fine.
It will start with ethanol but then dies. Nothing without it.
I made a 5mm spacer for the reed cage out of cork gasket material. Do you think that it is sucking air through there or something? Would that cause it not to start?
Thanks, guys!
