I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction regarding a problem with my brotherinlaw's scooter. It's a chinese 49cc scooter that he won at a car show by entering a raffle. It has 5miles on it. The scooter starts, then stalls. It will do this repeatedly. When it does start, if you give it any gas, it stalls. Sometimes I can get it to rev a bit by very carefully and slowly opening the throttle. It almost seems like a choke problem. At first I thought it was a fuel flow problem, but I verified that fuel is running through the filter by sucking on the petcock vacuum line.
Any suggestions on what to check next? The place the raffle people bought it from says it's not under warranty because it was purchased back in April, which seems pretty outlandish to me, but either way, no joy from them, and I'd really like to get this thing running for him as it's his only mode of transportation at the moment.
Thanks in advance, Lob

if it was bougth in april and only has 5 miles on it i would start with draining all the old gas out and a good carb cleaning

Drained it, gave it a quart of fresh gas...same thing. It'll start, then die. If you hit the throttle just a tad when it starts you can rev it up and keep it running, but if you let off enough that the wheel isn't spinning, it dies.

draining the gas isnto going to clean the carb out
when gas sits it gums up and turns to varnish and doesnt play well with the tiny jets in the carbs on these scoots
you have to pull the carb and pull the jets out to make sure they are clear as well as the passages in the carb

Put it on the stand with the back wheel off the ground and see if it still tries to die or can you now rev it up? If you can, you probably have a stuck variator pulley, its the same as trying to take off in a stick shift car from 5th gear, its going to die as soon as the belt gets enough RPMs to grab the pulley if the front pulley in not open wide so the belt its at it smallest diameter ,if the belt is riding up on top of the front variator pulley, it will die as soon as you try to move.Vegas

This is all being done up on the center stand. It won't idle up on the stand.

As stated above clean the carburetor and do a PDI.

Will try to get to the carb this evening. It really seems like a choke problem, but just don't know at this point. Thanks for the suggestions...will let you know.

Ok...had a few extra minutes this morning, and took the carb off again. Unfortunately, this appears to be one of the "sealed carbs", meaning that the heads of some screws are removed, like the screws that attach the float bow. I don't know if this is done to prevent tampering with the carb, or to ensure it meets some flaky emissions regulation, but it's pretty dumb. Anyway, took everything apart that I could, cleaned everything, saw no evidence of any buildups or deposits. I'll reinstall next chance I get and see if it made any difference.

Got the carb back on, definitely has fuel delivery issues. After cranking for quite awhile with no joy, I took the top cap off and removed the diaphram/needle assembly there. I can pour some gas straight in through the top, and it runs great until that runs out. I also loosened the bowl drain plug first, and have gas running out of the drain line, so the bowls had to fill up. I ran it that way several times, total time probably 60-90secs, so fuel definitely would have made it's way through the carb at that point. Must have screwed something up, so back to the drawing board.

Next update...back to the original symptoms. I hit the little "lift pump" on the drivers side about 10 times and it started, and as long as I hold the throttle about 1/3 open, it'll run as long as you're willing to stand there. Let off the throttle even a little bit, and it dies. Mixture screw? is that the one under the sealed cap? Seems odd that that could be the problem from just sitting. When the scoot was originally dropped off, it ran for about 3miles. Idled fine.
