I've acquired a very tatty PGO Big Max 50 scooter and need to order some engine parts but I can't find which engine is fitted. I've looked all over the engine but can't find a reference number on it. It's still (just about) running at the moment so I haven't taken the engine out of the frame, can anyone help please? Maybe if nobody knows what the engine is (maybe 1E40QMB?) it would help to know where to look for the identifying markings.

Thanks for the response and valuable links, I'm pretty sure it's a Minarelli engine, I'll check at the weekend though.

I've now taken the engine out and have degreased it ready to break it down, the only number I can find on this engine is located at the rear of the drive case where it would be covered by the wheel. The number is 'P106201' this is part of the casting, there is another number stamped on the rear of the transmission just below and to the left of the oil fill plug, the top line reads 'P1' the line below reads'*632891* I've checked all the locations on Brent's link to no avail, any ideas? One thing that may be of interest is that my scoot is in Portugal, it's first registration date was August 1999. The dates on the castings indicate the engine being built in September 1995. I bought it from a Dutch woman, maybe it was originally in Holland then matriculated here in Portugal. Still doesn't help with the engine type though!

Here are some pictures of the engine, I think it may be a bit of an oddball as the Minarelli oil seals I got don't fit. I need to order new oil seals now to complete the rebuild. If it helps, the Variator side oil seal was a 20-38-8 and the stator side was a real odd size: 15.8-25.5-7, there were actually two seals in the stator side, one behind the other! I've taken a close up of the stator side there is no retaining system for the oil seal! (Variator side retained by a circlip)
