Geely was customs banned in 2003 for importing large displacement scooters as 50cc, specifically the JL QT-50. People were able to get a fully street legal 49cc scooter that would drop 55 mph on the GPS on flat ground. This lasted as long as it took for someone to catch on. During that time, specific 2003 Geely CVT belt drive scooters with the fiberglass bodies and two stroke engines were branded 40qmb on the case and sporting a fully built 97cc (crank, bearings, and all) Linhai/Yamaha engine deep under the skin.
There were other signs of the secret within. The fan is double the size of the normal 49cc engine. Most 49cc engine Scooters stop their speedometer at realistic 40 mph or so while the cheater registers 100 km/h. That was another clue it was an asian market scooter as it did not come in MPH. It's occasionally possible to get scooters that are smaller displacement and register 100 km/h, but the cheater will peg it to the wall thanks to about a 5mph deviation in actual speed at higher km/h (pretty accurate on lower speeds).
Stroke length, long connecting rod.
Improving on a good thing.... I took the Geely head off after the treads stripped in the plug and replaced it with a jog 90 head and the difference was pretty big. The jog head was much smaller internal diameter so the compression went up enough to make a noticeable difference. Now it's like a squish head. In the pics below you can see the difference in size most clearly when you look at the old head gasket on the new head.
The new 90 head is too small for the 97cc engine, raising compression.
So there is my writeup on Geely's best kept secret. Their "banned in the USA" 97cc cheater.

I've had Scootie about a year and a half and it's been virtually trouble free aside of some little here's and there's. No major carnage. I bought it at 1,000 kilometers and it is at 4,000 kilometers now so I've been riding it a lot. Only thing I have done is put an NGK spark plug boot, an extended 1" longer rear shock to stop the scraping on bumps, and change the head as seen above. Oh, and maintenance wise I put a new start clutch on it. It's really been great and too much fun to ride. I have my big 250cc Legacy and I have much more fun on scootie.
