I'm going to have to replace my gears but I don't have a press. Any ideas on how I can do this without one?

reveeen/rupert has mentioned used a ball joint press in the past. Might be able to get one from a loaner tool program. I believe he used an electric impact with it.
The easy way would be to take the countershaft and new gear to a shop and have them press it on. I assume it wouldn't cost much. Any machine shop and most auto shops should be able to do it and some NAPA stores even have machine shop services.

Also, I bought another stock countershaft along with my upgears. The countershaft is all you'll have to press with the secondary gears since the large gear slides on and off of the axle without the need for pressing. I figured it's worth the extra $15 to be able to easily swap back and forth. May not be worth it to most though since many prob won't be swapping back and forth and I suppose you can always just buy the stock countershaft later if you want to go back to stock. Would be nice if playing with multiple gear sets.

I'm going to have to figure something out, that's the only thing that's gonna be holding me back.

For curiosity and anyone else that may come upon this thread, may I ask how much it was to have the gears pressed for you? It would vary from shop to shop anyway, but just for an idea.

if press is not available, then u can just use a hammer, big socket and car wheel bolt, like this: takes about 10 strong blows with a hammer to get it moving.

I tried going to Pep Boys and at first they said yes for $20 after showing them what needed to be done. They asked what its for and I told them it was for a scooter. They then said no because they didnt "want to damage the gears". I used the ball joint press idea to push out the old gear and it worked great! I tried using it to push the new one in and it wouldn't push it in all the way down, so, I took it to a motorcycle repair shop to have them press it. They pressed it for free but said it has a slight shoulder and won't go down any further. Here's some pics after they pressed it. Is the slight gap okay or should I try somewhere else that may have a stronger press?

I just used it as an excuse to buy a press. they can range from 100 dollars up. I paid 150 for mine its a 12 ton. used it one tome so far. actually I didn't even use it for the gears. I took those to work and did them. then when I needed to remove a stubborn bearing I bought one, cause I figured it would be nice to have around. and it has been for friends. like I said I only used it once. and I am still happy I have it. having buddies stop buy with beer to pay you for using your press is nice

most auto mechanics will have a press. tire shops that do suspension definitely will.
if you really want to do it yourself, it can be done with ice, a torch, some wood block, a dead blow hammer or rubber mallet, and a few beers. and patients that's the most important part. and don't crack the third beer until the job is done.
sorry for the double post

Yeah I tried hot and cold method when using the ball joint press and got it down a bit but not all the way. I tried it a few times actually and hammer too. That's when I decided to take it to the motorcycle shop. They were able to press it down a little bit further but not all the way. I just need to know of the small gap left between the gears will cause an issue or not. Any thoughts?
