I have a 50cc taotao and it has about 2500 miles on it & I'm wanting to change the drive belt. I Dont have an impact wrench & i have noticed on youtube that guys are just squeezing the clutch apart and taking the belt off & putting a new belt on by hand, my question is can u really change the belt without a impact wrench? just by squeezing the clutch apart with your fingers and replace belt that way? I'm a little reluctant to try it that way without an experts opinion because i saw in one video that a guy tried doing it that way and some springs came out or something.

I never had luck pulling contra spring back by hand , i usually take variator 1/2 off & go that route. Either a locking tool or impact gun is the cats meow to remove variator nut (usually 17mm).

I can depress the stock clutch spring by hand, and even the 1k ones.. even by depressing the clutch spring it still seems impossible to change the belt without at least taking the fixed face of the variator off like scooterpimp said above. I have used the "lock-the-piston-in-place-with-an allen-wrench-wrapped in electrical tape-by shoving it into the spark plug hole" method before but it's not advisable and you risk damaging the piston head and/or your cylinder head. My impact gun simply would not budge the variator nut and I had no choice at the time. Like I said, this method is NOT advisable, but if done with care, can be effective.
EDIT: I did this on a 2T scoot. I have no experience with a 4T scoot, and don't even know if this method is possible...

If you can replace the belt on that without removing a pulley or pulley half, the belt is too long. Might work on some models, but it doesn't work on any of my scoots with standard belts. Just for the purpose of doing rollers or belts you can get a variator holding tool and use a ratchet/wrench without needing an impact. An impact comes in handy for other jobs though. enviromoto.ecrater.com/p/5374715/naraku-variator-holder-tool-gy6-50

Actually i took it to a buddy who said he does it all the time and once the cover was removed he did it by hand as i watched and he did it in probably 2 minutes. he removed the starter gear thingy then squeezed the clutch apart by hand and worked belt in around the smallest part of the clutch and held it there, this put enough slack in the belt that he removed the belt from the variator, then put the new one on in reverse as i watched. And BTW the belt is not too large it's a 669 18 30 which is OEM for my taotao scooter.

I'm gonna have to try this next time my TaoTao is in need of anything in the CVT. I didn't think it worked on these, but maybe I never tried on the four-strokes.
