Hmmmm....well got the clips fitted, double checked everything and then tried to start the bike. No joy I'm afraid. The electric start is trying but it's not catching at all. I'm probably on the point of running the battery down now which is another headache as I don't have a charger. I sucked some fuel into the filter and the tube to the carb before starting. Tried the kick start repeatedly but no luck. Wonder if I should put the old spark plug back, maybe I got the gap wrong on the new one although if I did it can't be by much.
Any advise would be very welcome.
It's a bit of a bummer as it's a beautiful autumn day here in Edinburgh and I was hoping for a little spin.

Tried swapping the spark plugs...made no difference.

Did you verify that it has spark now? Always best to knock out the quick and easy things to check first.

Take the plug out or a spare plug and put it in the plug cap. Hold it by an insulated part and put the metal from the plug against an engine or frame ground. Crank it over and see if there's a spark. www.youtube.com/watch?v=LogSfY7NhkQ

If you have a jump pack, like a 12v emergency battery pack for jump starting a car, that helps a lot. I have a small one and when I was having issues with the scoot last week, I was killing the battery faster than the charger could bring it back. So I hooked up the jump pack and viola, instant 2nd battery. The jump pack plugs back into the wall and stores for later use. I was contemplating on hooking up a 2nd battery in series (parallel?) with the existing battery because I'm a believer in you can't have too much battery power. As for the no start. If you have clear fuel lines, check to see if fuel is moving (air bubbles maybe?) as you crank it, it may move back and forth but any movement at all is a good sign. It doesn't hurt to check for the basics, make sure the airway is clear, exhaust has no obstructions, a cold pint is within reach...

A misty, wet day here today so no real time to work on the TGB tonight. Took the fuel filter off and sucked on the vacuum pipe, fuel flowed OK so I'm assuming the petcock is working as it should. I've killed the battery (charger on the way) and can't get the kickstart to fire it up. Thinking about trying a dash of starting fluid into the airbox pipe, saw this for sale on eBay in the UK: www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/Products/productsresults/Parts-accessories/2011/September/sep1411-bradex-easy-start/Getting a bit hacked off with it now, how difficult can it be to get a bloody 2-stroke working. What is especially galling is a guy who works nearby has a horrible looking cheapo Chinese bike which he is happily wizzing about on....grrrrr...

OK...
Over the last two evenings I've removed and drained the fuel tank (just in case the petrol had been there a while). Removed and cleaned the carb again, this time using compressed air to blow through the valves. Replaced the fuel lines with new hose. Thoroughly cleaned the air filter sponge.
I'm now charging the battery. I'm away from home this weekend but will put it all together on Monday and hopefully I will have made some progress. The only thing I can think of if that doesn't bring any joy, is to check the compression.
Considering I'd never worked on an engine of any kind (apart from a couple of oil changes many years ago), I've at least added hugely to my scooter knowledge. Now I just want to be able to ride the damn thing !!

Good idea on the compression check. I've had compression problems a few times... should take 90psi or so just to run... 140psi would be joyous! I've rectified hard starting/low compression just by tightening the cylinder head bolts before.

Got a compression testing kit and tried it tonight.
When I used the electric start the meter didn't read anything. When I used the kick start it crept up a little bit but not much.
Put the spark plug back in and tried to start using that but no luck. Beginning to think this is a lost cause and I should just get what I can as a non-runner.

Sounds like what happens to my scoot, except mine runs but I'm only reading 30psi (not sure on the kpa). Huh.

Either that's cranking over really easy or TGBs have a lot better starting system than I'm used to. Does it normally crank over that fast? Could be that the compression tester is not sealing much at all or you really do have low compression.
