I recently bought a ATM50-A1 49cc Tao Tao and followed most (not all..didn't have some parts or tools) of the instructions provided via a Youtube playlist that I found through this forum from a Google search. The guy who runs that channel has been amazing help along the way. www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLm3-Rt5jsolvEQcIl1CMZGW5Yj_kP4WjcAnyway, everything's been going along smoothly (save a small fixable issue with a taillight) until today when my scooter suddenly made a loud screeching sound as I was pulling into a local fast food place and then the engine stopped. Then when I tried to start it back up it wouldn't. Every time I tried to start it it'd make the sound like it's trying to start but nothing else would happen. Then each time I'd try it'd sound weaker and weaker until I quit trying in fear of making things worse. After giving up I called a friend with a truck to have it hauled home to take apart and troubleshoot (not really knowing where to begin, but I figured I'd look for anything obvious first). Nothing appeared to be obviously broken at first glance, but the strange thing is, I tried starting it again mainly to see what the engine is doing now that I have it off and it started right up with seemingly no problems. Is it possible something could have overheated that cooled off on the ride home? I don't want to take off assuming everything's fine only to screech to a stop down the road again.

i would pull the cvt cover off, and have a look in the transmission. maybe something got weird in there, or maybe the belt shredded up some. look at the pulleys for signs of glazing. maybe some water got up in there and it got funny.
i'd check the oil level, and get a peek at the oil as well for any obvious sign of something gone wrong. if in doubt, a drain and fill would take 3/4ish quart and let you see all the oil, as well as get it changed. id check the gear oil in the rear end just for good measure.
id check the plug for signs of overheating.
those vids are from 90GTVert. they're really handy!
its possible something got really hot, that's what made me think of the trans.

Glad to see you made it to the forum. I agree with Up. Because of the screeching sound, the CVT would be the first thing I'd check.

It wouldn't start again this morning (not that I was planning on riding off if it would, more just checking if it was the same as last night). I popped open the CVT cover and, this not being my area of expertise, I want to make sure how it's supposed to work first. When I try starting it the one on the left spins but the belt nor the one on the right spins. Are they supposed to spin together and therein lies the problem or is that normal for idle?

I uploaded a video of the open CVT while I try to start it if that helps.
I can provide other videos and pictures if this isn't conclusive enough.
I'm handy enough to follow instructions but my only experience working on any kind of motorized vehicle is limited to what I've done with this scooter while following 90GTVert's advice and instructions on his video, so I apologize if I come off as naive at times, lol

if you have a trickle charger you should charge the battery, not good to let them get too low. can you move the belt and rear clutch pulley by hand? if not remove the nut that holds the clutch bell, DO NOT undo the large nut on the clutch itself, try to turn the clutch, if you can't your transmission may have locked up, possibly had low gear oil in it.

If the transmission did lock up is that a relatively easy fix? (If so you may have to tell me how to do it)
Forgive my lack of understanding of terminology, but just so I'm sure I know what you're telling me to do...which nut is the one that holds the clutch bell? I assume the one you're telling me not to undo is the big one in the middle? (and we are talking about the bigger one in the back since you said rear, correct?)
I can't seem to move the belt itself by hand as is without undoing anything.

They should both be spinning. With the rear pulley still and holding the belt, it's putting a strain on the starter and engine. Could be something wrong with the rear pulley or clutch or gearbox or a combination of those. You can try spinning the rear wheel by hand while the scoot is on the centerstand so the rear wheel is off of the ground. The bell should spin along with it. If the whole CVT tries to spin then you at least have a clutch issue of some sort. If you can't rotate it or it's really tough, something has gone wrong in the gearbox or the rear brake is locking up for some reason.

If I turn the tire the bigger wheel in the back (which is what I assume you mean by the "bell") turns with it but nothing else.

if the bell spins the gears are moving, you can try removing the belt and spin the clutch by hand, it could be a bad clutch, don't start the engine without a belt, it can jam up the variator, i've done that one.
