I will add to the above the following: Was all of the engine cooling shroud assembly re-installed after the BBK? If some 'back yard engineer' decided it was not needed, and left it on the workbench or garage floor, or binned it, you need to replace it ASAP. If the shroud is left off, or not assembled as original, the cooling air from the blower will not be directed over the heated spots and carry away excessive heat. The result is that the piston will get melted and make the rings stick, or there'll be significant damage to the cylinder wall. Consequence is it will no longer start. I assume(yeah, I know) that you are detecting an odor in your clothing, and figure that the exhaust gas it getting pulled from the muffler area and against your back when you are riding. Is the exhaust tight to the cylinder head? Does the exhaust pipe leak? Is the exhaust pipe tight to the muffler inlet? Some have a three-bolt fitting to connect the pipe to the muffler. IF you have one of those, is the gasket between the two pieces installed and intact? Is the muffler the normal or a 'performance' version. If the latter, it is possible the exhaust gas is being misdirected such that it is being pulled against your backside rather than dissipated. Got any peekshures? tom Sorry for the delayed response everyone. Thanks for all the help. To answer a few of the questions. I have been having this issue for almost 2 years now, but as winter closes in, I wanted to get it solved. When riding the moped in the winter, the smell increases exponentially. Today was around 96F outside and the fumes were still not nearly as strong. I have also noticed that the smell is not present when idling(possibly a little at startup on the choke, but its gone after 20-30seconds.) The moped seems to rev very high in mid range(no lack of power, maybe just upgraded clutch springs?). I have a hunch that the issue stems from the clutch not dis-engaging when going down hills or coming to a stop. The motor has tiny pops as it comes to a stop, with the motor dropping rpm's very low after the clutch finally disengages(2-3mph). I have indeed checked and the exhaust is fastened tightly to the head, and there is no leaks around the pipe connection. I am also wondering if it could be a bad valve (cupping or something). The problem seems to go away after riding at WOT for a few miles, and the moped typically idles/runs much better when warm.

Hmm. I think some of the things you've mentioned are from burning oil? Erratic idle can be caused by an air leak. Clattering noise going up hills? Yikes. Check all your fuel and vacuum lines and replace any that are suspect. Get it idling and spray carb cleaner around the carb and lines and see if there is a change when that happens. Checking the valves may be a good idea too. 80cc BBK's (83cc) the 50mm ones can cause problems with the crank bearing. It can be too much for them. The kits marketed as 80cc are really 72cc. I would find out which one was installed and if it still had the stock head. I have already went through and checked the lines, in fact I took off the vacuum petcock and changed it to be gravity fed (to completly eliminate that potential problem). I have checked the valves multiple times, and they are all within speck. Why do you think that its burning oil rather than too rich of a mixture? Id like to start by answering that question, so what would be the best way to figure out?

I bought a TaoTao 80cc BBK from a guy off of craigslist. He told me that he had done many upgrades to the moped.
I have been trying to track down and issue ever since I have gotten it. The issue is that after riding the moped, my back smells like horrible exhaust fume (at least I believe its coming from the exhaust because its my back). The smell is noticeably worse during cold days and not so apparent in the heat of summer.
Here are some additional things that might contribute to this problem. 1. There is a very strong smell of gas when warming up on cold days, and typically some white smoke for about 1-3 mins if its really cold out. When it is warm outside/ when the engine is warm; this is not an issue.
2. The moped revs up really high for takeoff, it catches for takeoff bringing the idle down, then revs up again to get going 10mph+.
3. Moped idles well at startup, after a few mins when the electric choke comes off, the idle is not as stable. After riding the moped for 5 mins (and it is warmed up); lower rpms bog the moped.
4. Going up hills when warm, makes a rather loud clattering noise, not sure where it is coming from. However it goes away immediatly after backing off throttle. Typically only occurs when going over 3/4 throttle, or trying to get up steep hills.
I can not tell if the smell on my back is that of burning oil, or that of unburned fuel, but it is very noticeable and not coming from the fuel tank.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Things I have done: Changed the air filter (cold air filter, the cone style) New carb and enricher New manifold New vacuum lines New Gas Cap New CDI Did you put all this on at once after the problem started or was some already installed Would throw the stock air box and filter back on as stated earlier as well. Colder temps, higher o2. It happened all the sudden with the colder temperatures. It still will start and run fine when its warmer outside (60+), no problem. I just put in a larger pilot jet, I miss-spoke when I said there was a 30 pilot jet installed, there was actually a 35 installed. The next size of pilot jet I have is a 38, so I put that in. It starts much easier, and idles better. I notice now that the idle is much deeper, compared to the higher more sparratic idle with the 35 jet. However now I am noticing some smoke out the tailpipe, and a weird missfiring/sputtering when trying to accelerate. After its past about 1/4 throttle it runs just perfect. I guess fix one problem make 2 new ones.

Needle position has nothing to do with idle, only about 1/4 to 3/4 throttle. Have you adjusted the idle mixture screw? Check to see if the carb float level is too low. Does the carb have a float bowl drain clear hose? If so, it can aid troubleshooting. For cold temp starting problem, what oil weight do you use? Can you do a compression test? Heavy oil or excessive compression can slow cranking speed. And now, just because I can't help it, when did you last adjust the valves? I was thinking that the carb float height might have had something to do with it as well. It does slightly angle down, due to the fact that the air filter is upgraded and the air side of the carb slightly angles down. I just dont see how that would cause the hard starting in the mornings. A couple things I forgot to add as well. It has great compression, and the electric starter's cranking speed is pleanty to get it started on a warm day. I figured out that after it is warmed up, you can get it to idle, however the idle speed is increased after warm. Very strange problem.

Things I have done: Changed the air filter (cold air filter, the cone style) Any time you go from using a stock air blow to a more open type filter, you need to increase jetting. Brand and what pilot/main jets are being used? Irrelevant. Suggestion: Replace stock airbox/filter system and use that instead. So I have changed the original 30 pilot jet to a 32. The main jet is also changed from a 70 to an 85. It runs much better with the choke on. As soon as it starts, when it's on the choke it seems to run much better. When the choke comes off it wants to die, no matter how much I try to increase the idle speed, it will try to die if it idles for too long. I took out the needle and raised the needle setting to the richest setting(furthest down notch). It will continue to run if given throttle, but the throttle has to be changing. Holding the throttle in one place will kill it. It seems very lean when revved, which did not happen before making it richer. It takes forever to return to idle.

I have a 2016 ATM50A1 Taotao 80ccBBK moped that has a couple issues. The moped has a cold air intake, upgraded exhaust, and 80cc big bore kit
First, starting in the mornings is always difficult. It is only difficult after sitting overnight, only when its cold outside though. The electric starter in the mornings will just crank over the motor, and it won't start. However, with 2 kicks it will usually start right up. I can tell that the electric choke/enricher is working because after about a minute or so the moped will rev lower to idle. This doesn't really bother me too much, it's more of an inconvenience. You can restart it right after it has been started for the first time on cold mornings right away and even with the electric starter. It does not have any problems starting when it is about 60 outside either, it can be started with the electric starter right away.
The real issue is that, after driving the moped when I go to park it, the idle speed has increased. The idle is still very good but its a little bit faster/stronger than when parked. If I let it idle on the center stand for 5 minutes after driving it, the idle will go back down to what it was originally set at. It's kinda difficult to explain, but it runs much better after being driven.
Things I have done: Changed the air filter (cold air filter, the cone style) New carb and enricher New manifold New vacuum lines New Gas Cap New CDI

I think you have the right idea on full. I also like to fill it all the way to the top, and I've just learned to expect that it spills if I do that. I guess it's never annoyed me enough to really investigate it beyond there. Yeah. Mine seems to be a substancial leak. Im more annoyed that I end up smelling like gas after I drive it anywhere. I wouldnt mind it if it was a slower leak. I drained some of the gas out this morning and that seemed to help, but id like to fix the root of the problem. im thinking about possibly buying a cap with a vent on the top of the cap. Then simply patching the hole on the side of the tank. My only worry is that recently I think the vent itself is leaking gas from the cap. That would explain why more feul leaks more. Im open for ideas, just really would like to get it fixed, so i dont smell like a gas station after riding it.

If that's a flaw, most of my Chinese scoots are flawed. Even when the cap is vented, they seem to have it. I even welded up that hole on a tank that I modified (new, never had gas in it before). It had a vented cap anyway and still worked fine, but if I overfill it, it will just come out of the vent or seal for the cap now. Easy solution is to not overfill it. I still continue to overfill mine regularly though. What would be considered overfilled? I have heard that it is under the gas nozel stopper. The metal bracket inside the tank? If that is the case. It would barely register full. I just feel like you hsould be able to use all the space in the gas tank, being that it is so small.

This is the gas cap. I think that the gas might be coming out of the vent hole on top of it. This is the hole in the gas tank, that I was mentioning. It is on this tank and my previous tank.
The moped is currently on a slope, that is why the gas level is as full. But it could be that I am simply filling it too full, however I dont think that it should leak depending on how full the tank is (just my opinion)

Air ventilation should only EXIST on Cap alone. not in the neck of the tank itself. are you sure that you dont have 2 Faulty tanks ? can you photo the "hole" at the neck area ? all CAP's are vented.... no matter Key or key-less versions on 139qmb qma.... Yeah I can get a picture tomorrow. But the hole looks like it was meant to be there. It is a perfect circle, and my previous tank (exact same model); had an identical hole in the same place. I have some gas tank sealant, and think maybe I should just put some of that over the hole, because my gas cap is vented anyways, so it wouldnt need to have a vent hole there.

I have been recently having problems with gas spilling out the cap in my 2016 TaoTao 49cc moped. Gas will spill out around the neck of the tank. The areas around my house are very bumpy and I think that has something to do with it. I was so irritated by it, that I bought a brand new tank and gas cap, however, the issue is still there. The problem seems to be alot worse right after I fill up the gas tank. I did notice that there seems to be a tiny hole on the neck, near the top, possibly for venting, but I thought that was strange because a full gas tank seems like it would be very easy to leak from this hole. I think that it might be where the leak is occurring. When i take off the gas cap, the gasket on the new gas cap is soaked, and the entire neck of the gas tank is drenched in gas. The new gas cap I bought is vented, and the previous gas cap that was on it was a lockable. I'm not sure if that one was vented or not. I am open to trying anything at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

80 main on a big bore kit? mine came factory with an 85 and I'm not sure the pilot jet size I don't have performance issues when it runs. I can get it to start with the kickstarter within 3 kicks, but it seems to want to bog down after the choke comes off.

Check the battery condition. Could be getting weak and cold weather will make it even worse. If you smell like raw gas, my first check would be for leaks in the fuel system and make sure the air filter isn't wet from fuel. I am not seeing any signs of a leak anywhere on the moped. The past couple days it has been really cold and I noticed that as soon as the automatic choke is disengaged, the moped idle gets lower and lower. Today I had to give it gas to make sure it didn't die. After about a 1 minute of helping it a little, it's completely fine. Finally, one other thing I noticed when driving it in the cold. If the moped is not to operating temperature but the choke is off, after coming to a complete stop and then throttling it, it sputters for like half a second then continue on.
