What's going on, New to the scooter scan but have always been a fan of the ruckus styling. So a couple weeks ago I bought a 50cc maddog off craigslist for $900. I been reading a lot and doing a lot of research on gy6 builds. So last night I purchased a 50mm bore kit which came with pretty much everything except clutch and torque springs and exhaust but but I'm thinking something custom for the exhaust.
The kit will be here by Friday I'm so excited!!! Since performance wise I have everything that I would need but I'm trying to figure out what to do about aesthetics. I saw a couple of pics of a ruckus with ape hangers thought that was pretty BA. Is there a way to clean up the wiring, has anybody done anything different far as headlights? I think I might keep the old school look since its already matte black.

Congrats on the new ride and I'm happy to hear you're excited about modding it! Hopefully you came across this in your research, but in case you haven't... the 50mm and larger bore kits are known to cause premature connecting rod bearing failure (big end) on Chinese scooters. The 47mm kits are easier on them and generally considered to be more reliable. Not trying to be the bearer of bad news, just want you to be aware. Some "de-tune" them by using heavier roller/slider weights in the variator to keep RPM down, usually around 6500RPM from what I have heard, and report that the engines hold up alright that way. FrankenMech has a Ruckus clone trike with LED headlights and other mods. You may be interested in his thread. 49ccscoot.proboards.com/thread/7806/another-old-noob?page=6

Brents advice is well heeded.
I went with the 50mm but I know the engine's life expectancy is up in the air. I also don't rely exclusively on my scooter as I have cars and other two wheel vehicles I can use.
As far as the scooter motor. A new one starts around $325 and up.
I have found it FAR more economical to buy a busted up scooter for just the bottom end than buying an engine. As long as you know how to check the bottom end. You can get a scooter motor for less than $50 sometimes that way.

Thanks for the heads up, I don't plan on doing a lot of heavy riding, just really need the power to get around town since I'm in a college town. Also came across a tomos lx, an 09 kymco agility 125, and a Pegasus Qlink 150. all for good prices, no more than $600 for either one. Thought about snagging up one to feed my need to tinker.
Recently discovered gas gauge doesn't work the hard way. Had to push to a gas station and just my luck they didn't have anything above 87. On the ride home it rode really rough. I'm thinking using the 87 may have clogged the carb...any suggestions? Not worried since I have the kit on its way and I'll probably just changed the oil and gas at that time to. Also I found a 24mm carb for a pretty good price, should I get the bigger carb or just up jet the carb that comes with the kit

If the connecting rod gives me major problems then I'll just order up the stroker kit and turn it into a beast but keeping fingers that nothing happens.
What weight do you recommend our have heard others using. I've read about some riders using either 4-8 gram weights. I'm only a buck 60 and 6'3, was gonna start off with 5gr and adjust from there.

Congrats on the new ride. I've had a kymco on my list for awhile but I never see one locally. Two scoots are better than one. you can ride one while you mod the other.

I agree more scooters = more smiles but then I have 4 and congrats on the scoot as for my 100 cc kit I run 3 each of 5 & 8gr rollers just went to 7 gr sliders just before the bike broke and I have not worked that much on it yet just remember to have fun

The kymco is pretty nice...there are some issues with it but I think I might be able to talk him down and leave money for more mods. With it being a 125 already, I'm thinking it could work out as a street fighter inspired scooter and this Maddog scooter can be my chopper inspired scooter.

Got the tank cleaned out and changed the oil since its been running a little rough. I'm thinking there may be a leak somewhere, it bogs down when you hit the throttle. Any suggestions as to what I should check for

check hoses for cracks and the manifold elbow would be my fist place to check

If the issues all started with the 87 octane, make sure you drain the carb bowl as well. 87 won't clog the carb, but there's a possibility you got bad gas.

i had everything typed out but forgot to sign in lol.
the ice bear engines have better cranks than the cheaper chinese ones. you can use a 50mm piston if you don't constantly red line it. you can get a heavy duty crank from scrappy dog scooters. hoca or NCY not sure which but one of them has a 44mm stroker that does not need extra gaskets.
