@ frankenmech,
I've been in a broke as hell cycle for going on seven years. If it ain't the kids needing/wanting something, its another unexpected expense. The money situation sucks ass, the one good thing I have been able to glean from this "cycle" is the extra time I have had, just to be with my kids. For ten years, I worked sixteen hour days six or seven days a week. Every week. I had to miss a LOT of school events, and ball games and the such. I had them all recorded, but the kids missed me. I would probably still be working those hours, IF the housing market hadn't of crashed. I held on to my trucks, van, and tools for as long as I could, but one by one things started to get sold. At my high point, I had seven guys working day shifts, and four that came in at noon. I tried to keep them on as long as I could too. It was a giant kick in the nuts to let them go, I still feel bad, Most of them, like me haven't recovered yet.
Long and short of it, I would kill a mofo if it would break this cycle.

We are all being ground to dust under the boot-heel of the 1%. One step forward, two steps back...
Avoid 'Imperial' entanglements.
