Recently I have been traveling a lot and buying Honda scooters to bring back to the Raleigh area to sell. What I do is ride a Greyhound bus to where the bike is, buy it and ride it back. Usually not more that 175 miles. The towns i buy them in are smaller than the capital area of my state that i live in so they cant get a premium price for them and i can since i am in a much bigger major area. I have done this with several 1st gen Mets, one (and my first) 2nd gen FI Met (smooooth but slow) and ..... ...the ruckus nightmare. This woman KNEW I was going to ride a Greyhound bus SIX HOURS. When asked 'is there ANYTHING i need to know about this bike before i come? any issues whatsoever?' No Sir! I get there and the bike looks good its running smoothly and then i notice...there is no damn key in the ignition!! The ignition was hotwired and a push button on/off switch was put through the battery box. I said 'wheres the key? ' She goes oh there is no key. In WHAT world is it okay to not tell someone there is NO KEY when you know that person is travelling for 6 Hours on a BUS to come see your bike? So I bought it even though there was no key and the VIN had been sprayed over with black paint and the year sticker removed. I had to have it to get back home. I went to DMV enforcement today and had the VIN checked, no report of it being stolen. I really didnt know that when someone says 'it runs' you STILL need to ask if it has a key. I guess i should ask if it has tires on the wheels too, thats probably next. The 5.5 hr ride back through beautiful SE NC was full of cuss words and anxiety. The bike of course, ran great. Thanks. rant concluded.

Hondas only. I would never attempt it on a China scoot.

Curious how you'd react when it broke down every 10 miles . Be happy it ran great and with no problems haha. But never the less, someone should be honest when selling stuff and don't hold back information.

wow. you guys have little faith in the Honda GET powered liquid cooled 4 stroke. or little experience with anything other than a fussy and unreliable 2-stroke. =)
a 175 mile 5.5 hr ride was nothing for these hondas they would have kept going to California, the weak link in the equation was only the Human riding them lol.

I would be more concerned with the broken out ignition , painted over vin. Etc, vs the ride., people dont bypass ignitions & deface serial numbers because thier upstanding citizens

She wanted to have a key in it so as to not be announcing to the world that it would run with no key. I would have never gone there if she had told me 'no key' but i had no choice but to buy it and take the chance that the story about the keys being lost was true. DMV enforcement told me the VIN has not been reported stolen so, alls well that ends well i guess.

I'd trust a Honda that far. I ride my Chinese scoots longer and farther at times. I would not however trust a scoot of essentially unknown state of repair/maintenance for 175 mile ride on the first go. Props for being adventurous. The bad thing to me would be that if you broke down and it was not something that could be repaired right there, you could easily spend enough to get it back home that you were breaking even or losing money instead of making it. I just don't have that much faith in sellers to provide me with accurate descriptions. Some are very honest, many are not. Just look around craigslist and I'm sure you can find some people with scoots that go way faster than reasonable or that are in great shape even though they look like they were hit by a bus.

Yes that is a risk but after owning Mets/Rucks myself I was willing to take the chance on them. All they have needed so far was some air in the tires and a little oil added & were plenty happy zipping down the road for the 175 mile ride back. One Met had been in storage for 8 mos but fortunately the girls BF was smart enough to run all the gas out of the carb so that when I put a new battery in it and some fresh gas it fired right up. The one 2013 2nd gen met from 2 weeks ago only had 700 miles on it. Wow that FI is amazing, smoothest running easiest cranking 50cc scooter I ever saw. The latest no key fiasco has taught me to ask even more questions though, I'll grant you that.

I would say you've been exceptionally lucky. I DO work on Honda elites, Metropolitans and Yamaha Rivas etc. I totally agree they are better made....but...It's ALWAYS something. And it's the thing you would never think about. You got some powerful guardian angels my friend. Personally, I would go get them in my car with one of these on the back..... You may as well get prepared because sooner or later, you're gonna get stranded 100 miles from home. It's roulette. What you gonna do when it does happen? As long as you prepare for that then you should be ok. Have a plan "B". Someone who can come get you etc... But assuming it will never happen is foolish imo. Still, sounds like a thrill. Everytime you get back safely with a new one it's "gosta" feel great

I'm pretty sure it would've been socially acceptable to slap the woman across the face with a limp white glove- Bugs Bunny style haha.
Oh how I wish I could reach through the phone and do the same for so many Craigslisters hehe. All my white gloves would be dirty and worn!

dang brother theses sound like some spectacular journeys you have been on.
I wouldnt mind doing one of those but with a couple small differences.... (1) riding on my own scoot that I have gone through and checked for problems and brought tools accordingly (2) bring a friend and his scoot for company, and someone to verify the truth of awesome experiences... you know how that is, if nobody saw it- it didnt happen.
lol
