Hi Paul well now you get to see what a thrill owning a Chinese scoot is. Every time I go for a ride I wonder if I will make it home running. You will also become proficient at wrenching on the cheapest made fasteners in the world(don't overdo any fasteners and usually when I remove some I replace with good ones). It's a good thing you already are a mechanic as it'll come in handy. But even after all the battles with the scoot you'll still say it's a blast to ride. And yes the speedo is wayyyy off so don't depend on it for anything. frank packard

Paul, congrats on getting your scoot, nice looking scoot, please take a little time out to have a poke and prod around your scoot sometimes the build quality isn,t upto scratch and the PDI,s a bit schechy.I,d check all the nut,s and bolts screws etc the electrical connections are pushed home, and consider putting some quality oil in the engine.Best to be safe than sorry and avoid that long hard push home when a connection fails because it was never tight in the first place. Please enjoy your ride.
cheers geoff

Well I checked the speedo with a GPS yesterday and yes its off. Only about 1mph up to 20mph. However after that it really starts go off. Its about 5mph off at 35mph on the speedo GPS shows my max speed at 36mph on flat ground.
I started poking around it a little bit and it doesn't seem to have any restrictions either. Possibly the CDI, I don't have a tach to measure rpms. I talked to the shop and they said they do upgrade the carbs on most of the scooters because the stock sealed ones are crap. But the new carb is nothing fancy, just a generic unsealed 19mm. He wasn't sure about the jetting but he said its probably high 70's for the main jet. I adjusted the idle mixture but haven't messed with anything else on the carb yet.
I pulled the cvt cover and looked at the variator. No washer and it has 5.5 gram roller weights in it. Is it supposed to smell like hot rubber after a long ride?
And when you ride it, is this noise normal? "waa waaa waaaaaaaaa waaaaaaaa wa wa wa waaaa"

Is the wa wa accompanied with anything you can feel? Could be a vibe from a wheel/tire or other issue. You may get a little more out of it with some fine tuning. 30-35 is normal though. www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5j8gHg5kMcIt gets really hot in a CVT, especially without much venting so it's normal to have a smell.

It kind of sounds like/feels like the noise is coming from the cvt, but not sure.I figured it has something to do with the belt system, I just wondered if it was normal or not. As far as a vibration that coincides with it I would have to ride it again and pay closer attention. It does vibrate though.
Something I noticed when I was checking out the variator. I have seen videos where people pull the variator off, put it back on and just slide the belt over the spindle. Not a chance in hell on mine lol. That thing was a bear to get back on, its very tight. I tried to pull the clutch out a bit to give me some slack but it won't budge if I try to separate it. Its either really stout or I am really weak.
And on mine the kick starter is part of the cvt cover, and the starter gear is on the outside. The outside variator ramp actually has teeth on it that the starter engages. I tried to start it it with the cover off the bendix popped out and I had to kill the engine real quick to keep from tearing something up. Got lucky on that one. Is it possible to run it with the cover off and the bendix removed? I suppose I would have to start it with a drill or something?
The reason I ask is I am curious to see of the belt is reaching its full amount of travel at different speeds. I am assuming at idle or low rpms the belt should be riding on the front spindle as low as it can go and as far to the outside of the clutch pulley. And at full throttle it should be reversed. Low on the clutch pulley and high on the variator pulley.

The rear pulley can be a little stubborn at times.
You can check your WOT belt travel better under load IMO. Put a mark from center to outer edge of the variator and then go run it up to full speed. The leftover mark will show you how far your belt is from the edge.
You can see where it sits otherwise without the engine on.

I usually grab the belt and pinch it together to open the rear pully!!! Makes getting the belt on then crank muuuuuch ezier then once I have the fixed pully bolted on i spin the crank by hand to tighten the belt!!! Just my2ct
