My daily driver makes some rattling noise like metal to metal. With the help of a forum menber i could finally narrow it down to the starter clutch. I took it apart, greased the needle bearing but noise still persist. The large part is hitting on the guide that holds the smaller gear if that makes sense. I can start the scooter with the electric starter, no problem and it drives like a champ it is just the noise that bothers a bit. What are my options here? Could i remove the whole starter thing and still drive it as is? Would replacing the bearing stop the noise?

I don't understand exactly what you mean but you can remove everything in there that doesn't move when the engine is running. The part that sits on the crankshaft needs to stay on.
Do you hear the nose at all rpm or just idle ?

My guess is the bearing or the metal ring where the bearing rides is worn and sloppy. I think there is a thin shim washer that goes on behind the starter clutch right? I think have heard of a guy adding a second one in there due to clattering. You can see it in this picture.

Rune 75I can hear it at any throttle or rpm stage. The big piece/cog that sits on the crank is the rattling/clattering. FoxThe starter has this large cog that sits on the crank and is kinda loose or has space so that it rattles. So adding a washer/shim would solve that issue? Is it the large washer right side of the needle bearing on your picture? If I would remove that large cog can I still run the scooter or do I have to customize something to be able to put the variator on it?

Runs fine with no E start stuff, some may require a washer to space the vari back to its original position once the one way starter clutch plate comes off.I prefer no E start, more parts, more trouble...

Yes the large diameter washer in the picture. Another shim might make it stop but it might not. If you want to just remove all that stuff and kick start it that will work but like 190Mech said you will have to add a spacer or washer(s) behind the variator so the belt runs true.

Just wanted to give a small update. I removed the complete starter thing behind the Variator. The starter clutch has a thickness of 2 or 2.5mm (kinda hard to measure) so I took 2 spare shim washers(image #3) that I usually use for CVT tuning. Each 1mm thick so total 2mm. I placed them on the crank between the adapter collar (the one you have to replace when you add a OR Variator like Malossi) and the Variator. (circle on image #4) Maybe it is just me but it is not only quiet now but also it drives kinda smoother then before, I would even say a tiny bit faster acceleration. Thanks for all the help and advice. 1. Starter clutch front view 2. Starter clutch rear view 3. 2x 1mm shim washer 4. Starter clutch removed
