So i have a newish (I'm the Orig owner but it has about 1000km on her) Taotao and I have been learning the maint on it since it has been acting up a bit and here in Miami are a bit of crooks from what I hear and have seen. I have had only one problem that the scooter runs but only while im rollin... fi I come to a stop so does the engine.
I have since done the oil change last night and gear oil today as well as the spark plug and run some cleaner thru the carb (which I hope is the problem).
Now for the actual questions... I'd like to make a few mods to the scoot, but I'd have noticed that the stock is the same if not more reliable? than the upgrades...
Performance Air filter- is it worth it and what is the benefit if any? besides taking off the air box
Anybody done a alarm/remote start? I think it s a nice little touch and in Miami your going to have people wanna see what you have in your scoot for sure.
I basically just want the scoot for zooming to work when im late and cant bike or run and to hit the beach.
But I want to mod for the best ride over all... not really crazy about going 50+ mph I just want a well maintained scoot.
so if anybody has any mod's that would be beneficial to the build im totally here with open ears.
I have seen a few speak set ups... and fuel filters? and spark plugs? even the ignition chord? I don't wanna spend money if its not gonna actually help the performance hahaha.
thanks.

For starters forget about the filter it won't really make it faster, just louder. And you will have up jet the carb to make up for it which means it will effect your gas mileage. You can mod the stock air box to work perfectly fine. If it has any restriction you can remove them, and if you want you can put some holes in the bottom of it to improve air flow. But again, this may require you to re jet the carb.
You should be able to adjust the idle, there is a screw on the throttle linkage at the carb, just turn the screw in a little bit and should raise your idle. You may need to adjust your fuel mixture, but if its a sealed carb that is going to require some extra work. If that doesn't fix your idle it could be a improper sized or clogged pilot jet, incorrect float adjustment or possibly a vacuum leak. Mine idles pretty low before it warms up, but once its warm it idles fine.
Ignition parts, skip them, its all hype. The stock ignition plenty good enough, if not better than the after market stuff. The only reason to change it is if the cdi is restricted, and I doubt it is on a taotao. Might be a good idea to check the plug gap and valve adjustment though.
If you want dependability I wouldn't go tinkering with the engine, like a big bore kit or anything. If you want a little more pep maybe lower your roller weight and put in some new higher rpm clutch springs. This probably won't help your top end much, but it should help it launch a bit faster.
If you are itching to spend money and tinker I would suggest buying an after market carb and jet kit (if you have a sealed carb)
I can't give any advice on the alarm or remote start since I don't have one and I really don't like tinkering with the electrical systems. Others here have them though so maybe they will chime in. My personal opinion though, I wouldn't spend a lot of money on one because if someone really wants your scooter I doubt one of these alarms is going to slow them down much. They weigh 200lbs, it is not that hard to just toss one in a pick up truck or suv and take it home and disable the ignition system. And me personally I don't see the point to a remote start on a scooter? It doesn't have a heater or air conditioning. And most start up in the first crank anyway. That is really going to boil down to personal preference though. If you think its cool get one I guess.

thanks guys... (gals?) I don't want performance I just want a well maintained and working scoot!
ill try those fixes but its drastically getting worse so im sure its some kind of plugged up situation.
the remote start is just something I thought keen and the alarm is just for the house or when I leave it close by. I live in MIAMI so things tend to run off if they don't have a alarm on them.
