Petrol, carb or break cleaner evaporate fast and don't give me enough time to brush unless i buy 1 gallon and brush the cases while dipped in it. Diesel or kerosene is what I use for cleaning gearboxes etc. Otherwise as said get them hot tanked at an engine machine shop. /something is making me think hot tanking isn't an option for alloy, but it's been a very long time since I had anything tanked.

Nowadays every engine is aluminium...and cylinders heads are virtually all alu since the early 70's (on euro cars at least!). I guess its depends on the detergent you're using. I do believe some are not suited for alu cleaning because they're too aggressive!

I have paint thinner at home also other highly flammable stuff. But how do you guys use those? I can't go out and pour that stuff over the cases and spill it around on the road or garden. And putting 1-2 gallon into a tub and wash the cases inside it is out of story i can't throw away that dirty flammable liquid anywhere afterwards.
So if you guys have a video or can explain how "exactly" you do that i would be very thankful.

I have those oil catch tubs which i use to put parts in and clean them. When im done i pour the cleaners (whatever i use) into empty oil flasks and bring them to the local recycle center. Same goes for old motoroil when you do an oil change yourself (on 4-strokes). Pour it in some soda bottles or oil flasks, seal it off and bring it to a place where they collect those liquids.

Find a tub that the parts you want to clean will fit in. Use the solvent of your choice to clean the parts in tub. After cleaning the parts let the solvent sit for a while so the solids will settle, then slowly pour off the liquid from the tub back into the storage container leaving the solids behind in the tub. You can reuse the solvent many times. Clean the tub out using a rag and brake cleaner, and it is ready for use again.

Before putting together the 2 case halfs people put some sort paste on one side of the case. Is that gasket maker or some other sealant? oldgeek Do you know, are the reeds on the reed block the same size as on the normal reed block?

I do not think the the reeds are the same as a stock, but I will check for you tomorrow.

Thanks Scott
So Permatex Motoseal will do the trick? The grey colored paste. Should i apply on both crank halfs or is it enough to apply on one side only?

One side is fine, don't use very much. Just a thin even coating to seal the cases. To much and it squeezes out and makes a mess. Without it you would have an imperfect seal and an air leak causing all kinds of tuning issues.

Yeah degrease very thoroughly and apply a very very thin layer. I always make with my finger a sort of tapping motion to make sure the sealant is nicely and evenly applied.

Also helpful is to make sure the case halfs go together and come apart easily. Clean the locating pin holes well, and lightly sand the locating pins if necessary.

Took off today and had some time to do some stuff on the Scooter and engine. - Washed engine block. - Took apart the Carb for cleaning and rejetting. - Removed the rubber cap on the mixture screw, finally!
