So im new to scooters completely Ive always been a big car guy, but for some reason i got really into scooters and its especially weirdto me becuz im 350+ and i have a thing for the 50cc. So one day I find 90GTVert and then i found this place. Crazy thing is that next day i found me a steal of a taotao50 for only $50. guy told me that it have a carb issue and so i took it i havent got around to buying or working on it yet but my question is should i go and spend the extra money and buy a 20mm carb and related performance parts or should i worry about getting it running first? also it was sitting for over a year but no noticeable rust.
90gtvert is you read this just got to say you really help me make the leap into scooters because being a big man its nice to see someone similar brush off the stigma of it and do something you enjoy

to the forum! It's always nice to hear I helped someone get into scooting. Life will be miserable if you worry about what other people think you should do. These little engines are too much fun to let the haters keep you away from them. Chinese scoots can be a pain and frustrating at times, but I own 5 right now so I guess the good outweighs the bad if you like to work on stuff. I'd probably just look for a good replacement 18-20mm carburetor for now. Worry about any other mods after you've got it running. You could also opt to give the current carb a thorough cleaning and inspection and see how it goes, but if it's one of the sealed carbs without an adjustable needle I'd skip that and buy a new carb. EDIT : Oh, and here is some help with cleaning : 49ccscoot.proboards.com/thread/363/carburetor-cleaning49ccscoot.proboards.com/thread/2024/cleaning-carb-cleaner

Welcome to the Forum! I'm not big around, but I'm really tall so I look incredibly stupid on a scooter and people give me hell all the time. I Don't care though because these scoots are just too much fun. Happy scootin!

Yeah that was a big thing with me i didnt want to get made fun of because im big and like little scooters, and well people make fun of them period. but yeah it helps to know that theres other "big" people that are into scooters and use them daily. and on top of that no one here seems to be to "high on their horses" to help a newb get into scooters or to help give info on stuff. that says alot about a community. Especially coming from the car world where everyone has something to say about everyone, especially the veterans.

When I first started riding I found that it was scooter hate in general. Getting called derogatory names just for riding a scoot on occasion. I just got a really loud pipe and drowned them out. Basically 10 years later, I don't really hear any flack about the scoot. I see some people laugh on occasion, but if I get yelled at it's usually something dumb like "do a wheelie". As far as laughing, I'm sure I do look strange on scoots, especially the smaller ones. I actually wear a full face and jacket and gloves and long pants while half of the sport bike and cruiser riders are out in tshirts and shorts and half helmets, so I think some people prob figure it's overkill. I've crashed at 50MPH before on a scoot and I assure you what I wear is not overkill. I'm not gonna ride around pretending an accident can never happen to me and I don't even find it uncomfortable to wear a little protection.

And i cant wait to get on the road im soo psyched to get on the road my wife keeps getting annoyed with me because i keep bringing it up haha

At one time,I weighed 285. I have lost about 45 lbs since and am about 5'9" tall. I am sure my scooters are breathing a small sigh of relief. Lol I now own 6 scooters and I will admit that I am addicted to them. They bring me great pride and joy because I have pretty much restored 4 of the 6 scooters. A lot of blood, sweat and work but well worth it. Once you get bitten by the scooter bug,it is hard to stop messing with them. Welcome to the forum.

Welcome. My first scooter experience was getting off a Harley and jumping on a yamaha razz. I didn't want to give it back. I'm not huge at 5 ft 8 in and 180 but I could stand to put down the snack chips lol. They are fun and you can ride them like they are stolen and no one looks at you funny
