Is it possible for a motor to run to lean and to rich? I drilled holes in my air box and have been trying to re-jet the carb ever since. Well needles to say it has only gotten worse. I taped the holes on the air box and things got better. But it is still running to rich. It is pouring smoke and smells straight up like gas. I have already removed the vacuum petcock to answer that question.

brent I am in such a catch 22 here. I dont have the money to take it to a shop but i am so done messing with it. It has failed to get me to work last week so i had to borrow a truck from work and that turned out to be a nightmare and I hope i still have a job. If I put the old motor back on then I can not work on the new one and if I dont put the old one on then I cant get to work. Ok so I will give a break down of everything I have done. I moved the needle up and down with no change. Put a 70 main in and it hardly runs at wot. Idle is always great no mater what I do. I drilled holes in the air box and removed the vacuum petcock. It gets to a mid RPM then it bogs down and revs back up. So I taped the holes back up and now it will go down the road but at 10 MPH. I bought 2 jets an 85 and a 92.5 and they are the wrong size even though the suzuki dealer that sells my clone scooter swore the would fit. I put the new carb on I forget the name brand and with the vacuum petcock removed the vacuum line plugged off, the air box in stock form, and the jet that scrappydog put in the carb that is when it runs at 10MPH. I cant even afford to get more jets right now as I have been going out of town every 2 weeks for court at a price tag of $500 a trip. I am going to go out in a few minutes and try putting the 101 jet that I made in with the air box stock.

Is this at just WOT or different spots? It is very possible to run lean at some throttle positions and rich at others. I think I have recommended it before, but if you didn't read it, you should. It's very important to understand what does what before attempting to tune IMO... hondanighthawks.net/carb14.htm

I have read that and understand it completely. Actually the graph with the ovals to show you what parts come in to effect at what throttle positions was the easiest to understand. but to answer your question yes this is all at WOT. I remember you telling me that if you took off the air box and it ran better then it was to rich and if it ran better with it on then to lean. but when I drilled holes it in it ran worse and stank of gas and smoked like a banshee. Makes no sense.

OK well just eliminated one source of problem. The throttle cable must have either stretched out in the last few weeks or the stem on the new carb is shorter. I took the adjuster nut loose and pulled it by hand and it revved up great. Now things are starting to look up. This is now looking like a Jet issue. Who would have thought. LOL not me. Well anyway this is the first bit of good news since i have gotten the motor.

That is tough since it's your ride to work. If not for having to switch reeds all the time, I'd say leave the carb intact on each motor and maybe swap them to tune in on a weekend or whenever you have time off to spare and a selection of jets. If you can't get it straight, swap back the old motor. The swap itself doesn't take that long that it's not feasible.
It sounds like you've got a 70 that's too small and whatever is in it is too big.
EDIT : Good find on the cable. Maybe this won't be so bad after all?
