I just bought one for my Zuma. It came with inner face of the var. how important is it to have a matching outer var. face?

The outer drive face matches the angle and size of the variator usually.

Not that important I don't think. I've used plenty of aftermarket variators with stock fixed halves. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but it's not a necessity in most cases.

^ same here. Some aftermarket vari,s might really benefit from a matching face plate

I *think* the Athena variator "kit" is, well, not really worth it. I was going to claim it was a bit of a rip-off, but it gives you "the stuff" (well, most of the stuff) you need when doing a cylinder upgrade in one box.
Your stocker, with the aid of a Malossi "yellow" take-up spring (driven pulley), and 5g rollers will work as good as the Athena "kit".
*The Athena "kit" ships with 7g rollers*, absolutely no use to you if you have a "pipe", or have been messing with your clutch springs. Good if you are installing a BBK into a stock situation, otherwise you better order some rollers (4.5g, 5g, 5.5g) when you order.
Would I do it again? (buy the Athena "kit")........ no

yeah i was never impressed with the athena the front ramp is very close to stock and not much of an improvement over stock i like the stage 6 varatior when compared to another zuma with an identical build accleration was the same and the stage 6 had almost 5mph more top end so the only diffrences were the contra springs that come with the varaitors and the varatiors them self the stage 6 scoot didnt have the drive face at that time
